This game easily makes it into my top 5. It's a 9/10 overall easily, and a 10/10 at times - the writing is fantastic, the fights are generally interesting, it has memorable characters, it has great replayability. It's great, and it deserves all the awards it got/gets.

Somehow managed to stay spoiler free all the way from original release until now, finally decided to pull the trigger with the game currently on sale and I must say, this is one of the best looking games I've ever played. The characters so far are incredibly real feeling, story I am not sure yet as only a few hours in. Already would recommend just for the vibes, they're oozing out of this game.

Only used this for a couple of hours so far, but I suspect this will be one of my top recommendations for friends. Having access to frame gen and decent upscaling on older games that likely will never officially support them is a game changer.

Do not spend $70 on this. If it goes on sale for $40 or less AND you've already played GTA IV and V, Witcher 3 GOTY edition, RDR2, Baldur's Gate 3, Half-Life 1 and 2, Skyrim and Fallout 4, then maybe consider picking this up.

It's like playing a very underdeveloped and not well thought out version of Fallout 4 in space. The whole game is basically a sequence of moments where you read or hear from an NPC about some event that happened or how brutal life is in a certain place that sounds kind of interesting, but then nothing you actually participate in is ever anywhere close to that interesting or brutal or mature.

Oh there's a pirate faction at war with a multi-planetary government, cool! In actuality you very rarely interact with more than like 5 people in a group at a time and almost every (if not every single) interaction you have with pirates you can just talk them down with no conflict.

Wow humans have developed FTL travel and can now make settlements on planets in many many solar systems, there must be so much diversity and bustling cities with culture and ar- Nah there's like 3 "cities" made up of MAYBE 100 people each with really only like 10-15 named NPCs.

Okay so maybe the scale is extremely small to the point that it's basically unbelievable, but surely at least you get a condensed experience of the cultural differences and such between "cities", right? Neon - the grunge, dank, dirty criminal hub with drugs, gangs, and clubs. That sounds cool! Oh there's literally one tiny club with the wackest music you've ever heard and not even just 'no nudity', the dancers are wearing these ugly ass rainbow alien suits. Seriously Neon is the biggest disappointing whiplash between what you are told and read about it versus what it's actually like.

Almost no matter what you're talking about when it comes to Starfield, it's the most mid version you'll ever see or play. Mechanics, aesthetics, quest design, character writing, etc. are all 4/10 Somehow it also misses the most obvious things. Oh it's a space game with ships, so surely you can fly your ship around on pla- You can't. Oh there's hundreds of planets, I bet theres a reason to explore and disc- there isn't.

EDIT:

After my second playthrough on steam, 3rd playthrough overall, I can confidently say that my original review is still fully applicable. Pretty much the only thing about Starfield that is actually kind of cool and interesting is the ship builder - albeit only if you use a bunch of mods to remove the horrible arbitrary design decisions that stop you from doing specific things with certain types of ship parts. I have spent probably like 40 hours just messing around with ship-legos

If you can get this game on sale, it's really a steal. I've played 280 hours at the time of writing and I haven't played as every country, I haven't tried all strategies. There's like an endless amount of different tactics you can use that keep the game fresh even after having played it for as long as I have. Mods also help a lot with replay-ability. Specifically The Road to 56 is SO good, it basically just takes all of the default things and makes them better and more in depth. Kaiserreich is a close second for me, if you like alternate history. I don't have any of the DLC but I've heard they are good, just expensive. I wouldn't really recommend buying the DLC unless it goes on a pretty good sale.

Edit: over 1000 hours in and a few years later and I am still loving this game, I've barely played any multiplayer and its still so interesting with unique situations happening while playing wacky strategies. Mods still carry this game.
