so it took me a while to actually get around to playing, long enough to forget where I got it from. However when Expedition 11 released I figured I would get into the game to see how it changed from what little I watched of it on Release.

Short Answer: Damn it is fun to play.

Long Answer: There is a lot of stuff that's been packed into this game. The beginning is a pretty well done tutorial on how to play the game, while giving you freedom to divert along the way. once you get going the availability of various sidequests that introduce you to the extra features are great while being completely optional. The finding of rare ships in random systems is always great to run across and having a Freighter makes having my collection of nice ships possible and nice to look at. The end game and the lore are pretty interesting if you like to digging into and exploring lore, but again optional. For example, my first playthrough I took my time and explored as much as I could, and it was great! my permadeath run was a nerve wracking straight shot to the core and skipped most everything. Really what you get out of this game really depends on what you put into it and how deep you want to go.

One last piece of advice for you: I found the normal gameplay to be pretty chill and relaxed. However, the Derelict Freighters you can explore. Oh boy. I decided to try something different whenever I went through them but it wasn't a big change, I simply swapped the camera to First Person and it changed the whole experience. All of a sudden I was in a horror setting, slowly stomping through a derelict infested with who knows what, swivelling around in the dark and watching my temp and life support tick downwards anxiously. I know that it's not really anything exciting, but choosing to change up my playstyle for that really made them memorable and I don't regret it.

edit Nov. 27: fishing update is a good way to chill, and the expeditions are wild.

Early Access Review
Is an excellent game to lose hours attempting to make everything work just the way you want.

Also it is a very pretty game to look at. When you get to the point of mass launching solar sails and carrier rockets just take a moment to go into map view and just watch them fly.

500+ hours before transferring to steam, and it is time well spent. Be it playing solo or finding a clan of friends to muck about with, there is gameplay for everyone. The community is a great place in general to find help and isn't very toxic.

Are there problems? Yes.
Are there glitches that make you want to throw your mouse? Yes. (looking at you Garden of Salvation boss color glitch)
Is this game fun without buying the dlc's? Yes.
Would I recommend it to everybody? Yes.
Am I excited for the seasons ahead? Yes.

Great game that has payed for itself in enjoyment. The challenges are difficult, but not impossible, and it takes a lot of planning to make your setups as compact as possible to squeeze that one more production line to get that drug out. Add the fact that you can make custom games with custom challenges and restrictions and this game can be played for hours without realizing it.

Best to play with a group of friends, because then you can laugh at them when you dodge attacks that cripple them.

Seriously though, it is a very well put together game, with great controller support, nice map generation that ensures no playthrough is the same, a very nice art style, and hilarious animations when enemies die such as when killed with an arrow the body explodes with bone fragments.

The only con I can see is that multiplayer can get some lag in between turns or actions, but that might be my internet.

Watch the RNG, for it is a tricky mistress. Also, screw that leperchaun scourge who needs perfect hits to land.

This game.
This is a good game.
This can be a long game.
this can be a very difficult game.
This can be a very boring game.
But at the end of the day, when your empire stands above the ashes of 25 other empires and controls the galaxy, it makes you look back and say, "lets do it again, shall we?"

Not to mention the feeling of accomplishment when wiping out a belligerent fallen empire that hates your guts.
