I put around 100 hours into this on a free trial of Gamepass about 2 years ago, bought it on Steam during that time and refunded shortly after for reasons I'll get to. Started playing again because a friend gifted it to me. I enjoy the game, and the freedom it gives players to do whatever they want is really cool. So why the negative review? Because the management/moderation is some of the WORST I have EVER seen from a game company.

There is a feature where you can buy and name your own ship. Being the extremely funny guy that I am, I named my ship The Hard Arr. I naively thought nobody would have a problem with a clever pirate-themed pun like this, because I'm not terminally online and mentally ill, but I forgot it's current year. Being the virtue signalling, Disney-controlled corpo that they are, Rare PERMANENTLY revoked my ability to name my ships, without warning.

Look, I get it, they want to foster a kid-friendly environment with no allusions to dirty things (even though there are official names in the game that allude to genitalia, which is why I thought my name was fine), and I have no problem with changing something if the developer has a problem with it and asks me to change it. But that's the problem, they didn't contact me at all. No warning, no notification, nothing. I contacted support, they basically told me to F off and that their decision is final. So that's it, a permanent revocation of a feature for a first-time offense for something I didn't even know was a problem, with no recourse. They've done this to other people as well for equally ridiculous reasons. Look up the guy who got banned for naming his ship Big Deck Energy.

Like I said, I enjoy the game, and I will continue to play since I got it for free, but you can be damn sure I won't be spending a single penny in their cash shop, and I advise others to avoid doing so as well. They don't deserve it.

The Nier Automata of Sonic games. Gameplay is incredibly fun and you have insane freedom of movement. Only downside is the story needed more cutscenes. You can't have an over-the-top ending like this and not have enough story elements, emotional buildup, and character development leading up to it.

I don't really play this anymore because of the degenerate playerbase these days, but I'm still leaving a negative review for the incompetent decision to kill modding in a community-driven virtual chatroom.

While I recommend this game because it's a fantastic co-op experience, there are a few things about it I truly can't stand that the devs refuse to make adjustments on that much of the community has asked for.

Deep Dives. These are a lazy excuse for endgame content. It's just 3 missions strung together with mix and match objectives and no resources to collect. A great high stakes challenge, sure, but it's no different from just doing any other mission, and the multiple objectives in one mission don't make it any more interesting or fun.

Dreadnought Hiveguard. This thing is not fun to fight. It's a boring slog that just feels like it's wasting your time instead of creating an engaging combat experience like the other 2 dreadnoughts provide. Removing the requirement to kill its sentries before you can do any damage to it would be a step in the right direction.

Weekly matrix core event. They recently changed it so that Industrial Sabotage shows up in the mission requirements EVERY SINGLE TIME. I HATE doing this mission. It takes too damn long, it's repetitive, and just an overall pain in the ass. We shouldn't be FORCED to play this mission to earn cores. If not enough people are playing it, then maybe that's a sign that it's not fun and you should adjust it instead of forcing people to play it.

This isn't the devs' fault but my god the community is repulsive. A bunch of reddit mod-tier personalities up their own asses. You know, those pseudo-intellectual "forum regular" types who shut down any kind of criticism regardless of how valid. This is probably why a lot of stuff doesn't change because these troglodytes are the only people the devs will listen to.

I enjoy playing shmups but I've never been very good at them, at least never good enough to 1cc anything. And that's not going to change with this one. However, ZeroRanger is very accessible and lenient in that it allows you to start from the beginning of the last stage you got to even if you use up all your continues, so if you're even slightly interested in the genre, this is certainly a worthy game to start with, apart from being one of the best shmups ever created. The game throws something different at you every moment, there's very little repetition and tons of enemy variety, a bunch of weapons to choose from and utilize at the right moments, all wrapped up nicely with amazing music and a minimalistic but deep and philosophical story with Buddhist symbolism that almost brought a tear to my eye. The true final boss is a beautiful homage to Radiant Silvergun, one of my favorite shmups of all time.

Before attempting the true final boss, I recommend backing up your save file, because when it tells you you only have one chance, it means it. Some people have a problem with this, but I understand why they made it this way because it's part of the story and the theme of the endless cycle of life and death. Even if you don't back up your save, it really doesn't take long to get back to where you were, especially after you've improved your skill, which is the whole point of shmups in the first place. Play through over and over until you master it.
