This game made me realize I really suck at chess

Fun game though!

UPDATE: I learned the Prince breaks the AI and now I'm good at chess :)

Most people that negatively view this game normally do it because it isn't Darkest Dungeon 1 but again. If you like more traditional roguelites and DD1's combat, you'll love this game.

Here's a few common points I see in some reviews.

1. "There's no permanency to characters". This is just outright incorrect. DD2 has a mechanic that will allow characters that succeed in killing the Act's boss to continue into your next run with added buffs of your choosing and the same quirks they had before.

2. "There's no Hamlet". This ties into my original point of reviews just saying "This isn't DD1 therefore it's trash". Yeah, there's no Hamlet, because this game focuses far more on the combat side of things. I understand disliking that, but leaving a negative review just for that is quite silly.

3. "There's no content/less characters". This one is my least favorite argument by far, because it's comparing a game that just came out of Early Access to a game that's had multiple years of content updates and DLC. Of course this game isn't going to have as much content right away. It also didn't launch with Workshop support, something that I've also seen complaint about, but they've said multiple times it's underway, and do you really need mods immediately? Calm the hell down.

4. "You lose everything when you die". This one is honestly a very close second to number 3 in terms of my hate for it. It's a ROGUELIKE. The whole point of the genre is that things reset from the beginning when you die. Making a negative review because you didn't realize what you were signing up for is just dumb.

5. "Runs take too long". This one I do understand, but I wanted to bring it up because the people that complain about this are the same people that complain about my first point. People say "oh there's no permanency" (which again, isn't true) and then complain that runs take too long when that same fact of runs taking too long brings the exact same anxiety that losing a party member in DD1 would. In both cases it's time wasted. Either from grinding a party member up or losing in a run. That being said, in DD2 each lost run allows you to spend Candles to unlock new items. Though this only matters for a limited time, there's a LOT of things to unlock. After nearly 100 hours I'm still unlocking everything, but I'm sure someone could do it in 50, which is still plenty of time! Not to mention this game is FAR more consistent than DD1 due to the token system. I've seen complaints about trinkets being too inconsistent, but there's so many different ways to get them and there are plenty of very good ones that you'll very frequently be able to find a good build.

There are some legitimately bad things about the game. The Stagecoach is a bit too slow (though I don't really mind it myself), the UI isn't as good as it could be (this can be circumvented entirely with a keyboard, but it's reasonable to want to play this game entirely with a mouse), and of course there are optimization problems in certain parts of the game.

For the most part though, it's just "old game good new game bad" BS, which is funny, because if it WAS just "Darkest Dungeon 1 but again" there would be just as many people complaining that it's too similar to the first game.

For fans of traditional roguelikes, and fans of Darkest Dungeon's turn-based combat, this is a refined version of said combat that you'll find much enjoyment in.

I was doing well. I was doing great, in fact. Then I did my first run of the Darkest Dungeon. 3 of my best heroes died, and the remaining one barely escaped with their life. Remember that overconfidence is a slow, and insidious killer. For if you don't, you won't make it out alive.
