Eh, not an often user of GOG, got used to Steam much. But still wishing you luck whenever you'll be.
Yeah, ZDAEMON is pretty popular port for multiplayer sessions which is more recommended to play along Zandronum.
You can setup this port and use an application called Doom Explorer ( http:// doomutils.ucoz .com) which gives options to configure the port that you're using, host or search for servers with bunch of ports that people are using for the game with different wads. Or you can go with DoomSeeker ( https:// doomseeker.drdteam .org) it's a server browser too, depends which one is comfortable for you.
There are a few options:
1) Just use Quake Live that you can buy in Steam today, mostly players playing FFA, Freeze Tag nowadays all the time with filled in pack of people.
2) If you want classic Quake 3, just use Quake 3e ( https:// github .com/ec-/Quake3e) - modernized port for Quake 3 with few tweaks. And visit server list for Quake 3 to check which servers are still alive with often appearing playerbase which are pretty decade-experienced persons to fight with.
But trying playable multiplayer if there are still some players gives good experssion of it, maybe different from classic Doom 1-2 Multiplayer (If we're counting FFA, Duel, TDM, etc in DWANGO experience and ZDAEMON Sessions) since you're a killer machine with chanigun and grenades here. Different tactics of gunplay, from my opinion it's good but underrated.
So yeah, we basically stuck with Zdaemon port for Multiplayer sessions these days due to Forums, Server Browser, Blogs and other bunch of stuff that connects community. And it's one of the known ports that still is supported and lives.
We even got a coming up tournament for DOOM 2 (ZDaemon port) TDM Tournament with Prize pool.

Maybe we boot up Doom 3 or Quake 4 for Multiplayer some day for Online, who knows. We were hella busy with Quake 1-3 LAN events recently.
