I now have a business class laptop. It has a dedicated graphics chip, but the intended function of this machine is not to play demanding games - especially at high settings.

I don't really play video games so much anymore, and don't care to play anything new or modern. Killing Floor 2 is probably the latest and most demanding game I can see myself playing. That being said, here are My favorite game genres:

- Old-school action / platforming / 'Metroidvania' (Castle in the Darkness)

- Beat 'em ups (Streets of Rage 2, Final Fight)

- 2D fighting (Street Fighter II & III, the King of Fighters XIII, Samurai Shodown)

- Old-school first person shooters (The Ultimate Doom, Heretic, Quake I and II, Duke Nukem 3D, Aliens vs Predator)

By the way, if you're going to play Steam games on PC running Linux, you really should try to get an AMD graphics card or chipset. My laptop has nVidia graphics, and because nVidia has not been cooperative with publishing open source drivers for Linux, getting games to play in Linux has not been easy for me. Yeah, I could use Windows, but then performance would likely suffer because of all the spyware and adware baked into modern Windows.

Here are my thoughts on Unreal II: The Awakening (UT2) as someone who enjoys old school FPS games and also had a blast playing all the Unreal Tournament titles - with the exception of UT 2003 and UT 2004:

PROS:

- I think the graphics still look reasonably nice as of 2023. In other words, it's not like they've aged poorly.

- The game may have had demanding hardware requirements back when it was released, but any half decent PC built since 2010 or so should be able to run UT2 at max settings with little difficulty.

- The action is decent, if uninspired.

CONS:

- Once the game loads, you are forced to hit the 'Esc' key just to get the main menu. No other key will do the job. The fact that more commonly used and accessible keys like 'Enter' and the space bar could not be used makes it seem like UT2 is a game that was, first and foremost, designed for the original Xbox and was later ported to the PC.

- The game has long cutscenes that cannot be skipped.

- Loading saved game states takes quite long - especially for a game that was published in the early 2000s. I'm reminded of waiting to load saved game states for Duke Nukem Forever off of a solid state drive. To make matters worse, the game regularly crashes or glitches by loading endlessly while attempting to load saved states.

- The character you control moves slowly.

- UT2's levels are linear, do not promote exploration, and lack interactivity.

- The music is generic and unmemorable. While the sound effects are serviceable, they're nothing to write home about.

- The original Unreal game let you simulate multiplayer matches against AI-controlled bots - not unlike what Unreal Tournament became. However, UT2 lacks any such feature.

- At the time of the UT2's release, it wasn't doing anything special in terms of game play mechanics, graphics, story, etc. Half-Life 1 and Red Faction had already been out for a while. As overrated and regressive as I believe it has been for how FPS games are designed, Halo had also been out and had been very influential. Other than having its own plot, which hasn't struck me as particularly memorable after playing for a few hours, UT2 doesn't seem like it was doing anything to be different or special compared to other FPS games.

CLOSING IMPRESSIONS:

UT2 seems decent, but inferior to its prequel as well as the first Unreal Tournament. I will continue playing it and forming my opinion, but for now, I'll say that UT2 isn't a game I'd recommend people spend money on. And even if you wanted to buy the game, as of 2023, Steam has notified me that it is "no longer available on the Steam store." I suspect that happened because Epic Games made it exclusive to their virtual store. If that is the case, Epic can get bent for limiting customer choices and probably making it nearly impossible for anyone who doesn't already own UT2 to find - much less read - this review.

GEFORCE NOW - Heard about it, but never used it. Didn't had any interests in cloud-gaming, but maybe somebody has their taste in that.

About DOOM:

Yeah, ZDAEMON is pretty popular port for multiplayer sessions which is more recommended to play along Zandronum.

You can setup this port and use an application called Doom Explorer ( http:// doomutils.ucoz .com) which gives options to configure the port that you're using, host or search for servers with bunch of ports that people are using for the game with different wads. Or you can go with DoomSeeker ( https:// doomseeker.drdteam .org) it's a server browser too, depends which one is comfortable for you.

Well, if you're willing to play online matches in Quake 3.

There are a few options:

1) Just use Quake Live that you can buy in Steam today, mostly players playing FFA, Freeze Tag nowadays all the time with filled in pack of people.

2) If you want classic Quake 3, just use Quake 3e ( https:// github .com/ec-/Quake3e) - modernized port for Quake 3 with few tweaks. And visit server list for Quake 3 to check which servers are still alive with often appearing playerbase which are pretty decade-experienced persons to fight with.

Well, playing DOOM 3 BFG Edition is cool too tho, not the best vanilla experience since some changes were made but basically for the consoles.

But trying playable multiplayer if there are still some players gives good experssion of it, maybe different from classic Doom 1-2 Multiplayer (If we're counting FFA, Duel, TDM, etc in DWANGO experience and ZDAEMON Sessions) since you're a killer machine with chanigun and grenades here. Different tactics of gunplay, from my opinion it's good but underrated.

So yeah, we basically stuck with Zdaemon port for Multiplayer sessions these days due to Forums, Server Browser, Blogs and other bunch of stuff that connects community. And it's one of the known ports that still is supported and lives.

Hey man. Saw you commenting about the DOOM thing. Actually I've been doing "DOOMING TIME" for quite some time, playing Deathmatches, other sort of thing since I've got LAN events in St.Petersburg and doing some help for LegacyZ Community.

We even got a coming up tournament for DOOM 2 (ZDaemon port) TDM Tournament with Prize pool.

If you're curious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dRvclcXC2Y - here's a teaser.

https://www.zdaemon.org/?CMD=news_item&ID=2104 - announcement itself

Maybe we boot up Doom 3 or Quake 4 for Multiplayer some day for Online, who knows. We were hella busy with Quake 1-3 LAN events recently.
