The Night the Carsons Disappeared is a horror "movie" that lasts about half an hour. Without spoiling the experience and giving too much away, it explores the mysterious and still unexplained 2009 disappearance of Katie Carson's husband, Michael, and her two children in Richmond, Ontario Canada. All in all, it takes elements from horror classics such as The Amityville Horror, Paranormal Activity, and The Strangers.

Since you, the viewer, are playing as Michael Carson, you will be seated in the living room of the family home. Keep in mind that this is the non-interactive version of the game, and therefore you will just be observing your surroundings. Around you, strange and disturbing events slowly unfold in both audio and visual form. Depending on how easily you scare, there's a good chance that you may quit before the entire duration is up. Thankfully, there are no heart attack inducing jumpscares, but rather a combination of subtle and in-your-face moments of terror.

There are a few downsides to The Night the Carsons Disappeared, and most of them are pretty major immersion breakers. Many times throughout the experience the audio plays through the wrong speaker channel; for instance, a door opens to the right of you but the sound of it opening comes through the left speaker. There are also many situations where it seems to take minutes for the next event to start happening. Additionally, the graphics are really, really terrible even by low standards, especially where the character and dog models are concerned.

For a buck, The Night the Carsons Disappeared isn't awful by any means. It has a lot of potential and room to grow, and hopefully the developer can iron out some of the aformentioned issues prior to the release of the interactive version. The set up for the story is highly believable, and I actually searched to see if it was based off a true story. For what it is, and for the price, grab it if you enjoy some mild scares.
