Metal Dead is a 2D point and click adventure that follows metalheads Malcom and his best friend Ronnie through the mayhem of a zombie apocalypse. Driving along the zombie infested highway in a rust bucket of a car, Ronnie reveals to Malcom that he's driving them directly to where he believes the outbreak began. Malcom isn't exactly thrilled over the idea, and he grabs the wheel and ends up crashing the car; inadvertently killing Ronnie in the process, who then turns in to a zombie. Stricken with grief, Malcom severs Ronnie's head and carries it with him for the remainder of the game. The story then dives into a spiral of hilarity, filled with cultural references to both metal and horror.

The art direction of this game is absolutely fantastic, though some may argue that it resembles free flash games that you can find on places like Newgrounds. It's a simple, overly-cartoonish style for sure, but it adds to the vibe that Metal Dead doesn't exactly take itself seriously. There's also plenty of blood, entrails, zombies, and violence to go around, further enunciating the dark humor of the title. The chiptune soundtrack is also worth talking about, because the songs are extremely catchy and I'll admit, I even headbanged a little bit to the track at the very beginning.

Though it's not necessarily unpredictable by any means, the story is fun to indugle yourself in. No matter the simplicity of the base plot or premise, the dialogue is what's really captivating as it provides chuckles and even good laughs throughout the 4 hour length of Metal Dead. Each character has a thriving personality of their own, and you really have no idea what may happen to them next. The puzzles aren't very hard to figure out, and even though this is a point and click adventure game, it feels more like an interactive story instead at times.

Without a doubt, Metal Dead is a must play title for horror fans, and especially metalheads. The cartoony graphics, kickass soundtrack, and morbidly hilarious story/dialogue are well worth experiencing at least once. Sadly, there's not a lot of replay factor here, all of the achievements can be unlocked on one playthrough and there's no bonus content. The ride lasts roughly 4 hours, so enjoy it while it lasts! Well worth it for the low price of $5.49 CAD.

Rating: 4.0/5.0 - Excellent, highly worth playing.
