So I've done it. I finished the story. Here's my final take (light spoilers, and yes, I do recommend this game):

Your choices do not matter. Like at all. There is like one or two cut scenes that are different based on what you choose at the end, or whatever, but otherwise, the "choices" in this game are worse than Fallout 4. I found the dialogue options often included "Yes" or "Yes, but give money" or just "♥♥♥♥ you, but yes". The game rarely gave you a way to just say "no" or to tell people to ♥♥♥♥ off. The only choices that you make that actually matter are whether or not to use "Dark Arts" and there were NO consequences for doing so. I expected a bit more on that front. Now, onto the good stuff.

The combat in this game is fun if you're looking for a wizard power trip. I found myself loving the fact that I could just dominate a battlefield with ease if I used the proper spells and potions, but I ended up having to turn the difficulty to Hard, because medium felt like easy mode. The only issue I have with it is that half of the combat spells just didn't feel necessary for me. I rarely casted Glacius, Transformation, Confringo (Post Bombarda), Depulso, or Descendo. My combo was usually just Accio, Incendio, Two basics into a Levioso, and finally a Diffindo once I got that buffed to hell. That would finish off most basic enemies. Near the end, when I found myself in a fight with trolls, I would just use Crucio and curse every enemy on the battlefield, before killing them all in one shot. While that felt amazing the first few times, it quickly got boring.

The best parts of the game for me were the beast taming, sidequests, and the world itself. The main quest was just a drag, and without the super interesting sidequests, I would have probably refunded the game. But, there are so many amazing stories in this game, from searching for a species thought to be extinct, to trying to cure the incurable, to something as simple as solving a mirror puzzle. It felt like every sidequest had a purpose.
The beast taming was also wonderful, but that is probably just because I like being able to accumulate beasts and farm resources myself. Looking at the system, it is pretty basic, but that's okay because it feels deeper than it is.
Then there is the world. Oh boy, does this game nail it with the atmosphere. Aside from a few bugs, which seem to have been patched, these devs have done a wonderful job portraying the Wizarding World.

All in all, I wish I could give this game a 10/10 for the atmosphere alone. But, I can't justify giving this game more than a 6/10. In it's current state, it's not worth $60. Hell, there are some parts where I don't feel like it's worth more than $30. Wait for it to go on sale, and then try it out a bit before committing to it. I do recommend this game, but only if it's on sale.
