I like it. No, it's not as good as Left 4 Dead. But I've had fun with it and played it a ton. I don't think it deserves all the hate.

I think people are upset with the gaming industry in general and they will take any chance they can get to express that. I think it makes them feel good to feel like the gaming industry is being punished. I believe that's the reason this game is the target of all these people flaming the steam forums and reposting the CrowbarCat video over and over again. I don't think it's because this game is particularly bad or because Turtle Rock did anything morally wrong.

Early Access Review
It is super clunky. The AI runs around in circles like decapitated chickens. looking at my friends list a dozen people have bought it and no one has put more than an hour into it. . I asked the community if I should give it another chance and they got extremely defensive and told me to refund it and to go play Fortnite then the mods gave me a warning for "Trolling" and removed the post. So yeah I refunded it. I've never had such intense and instant buyers remorse

I highly recommend this game. Before it came out I was pretty worried about it. Mainly the price and the lack of 3D realms plus they didn't exactly lead an encouraging ad campaign. But the price was sorted out by good deals everywhere within a month of its release. I picked it up for 20 bucks on the humble store and it came with a DRM free copy. And after i got to play through it turned out to be one of my favorite games of 2013.

To start off. This is NOT a straight reboot like Serious Sam 3 or the new Rise of the Triad. Flying Wild Hog (Dev) really put their own spin on the game. The game has the sort of FPS\RPG aspect going on. With abilities and powers. as well you can upgrade your weapons to give them more damage output and if you have a bit of cash stored up you can upgrade them to have a secondary fire which can really change the way you use that weapon.

The thing that really caught me off guard about the game and what really made it stand out to me were the characters and story. Hoji was funny and likeable and Lo Wang was a real character now instead of a joke like in the original. (Not to bag on Shadow Warrior.)

The story that you follow is actually prety interesting too. As far as video games go at least. without being 'spoilery', I must say. The way the story goes toward the end will suprise you. They break off from the silly part of the game at the end there to bring you a real conclusion to the story. And I think the ending alone will always make this game stand out to me.

To wrap things up. The gameplay itself is as fun and challenging as you would want and with the skills, powers and upgrades you can take many different approaches to the game and play your own way.

Very fun and challenging.

Has had some optimization and bug issues but it has a dev team that truely loves it as well as their fans.

It's the classic fps style. Bunch of weapons that cause many different kinds of murder, that are given to over the course of the game.

There are a few characters to play as, each one having different stats. mostly running faster but giving up damage resistance and vice versa.

Has the clever level design you normally see from the genre, with predetermined weapon and enemies spawns.

Great designed as well as challenging bosses.

The game also dropped some apples in the "parkour/jumping puzzle" basket. Which, was a popular complaint with a few reviewers and players though I actually loved those parts of the game. The main issue they had with the jumping puzzles i think was the time between checkpoints. They have since added quicksaves for girly men who aren't hardcore enough for checkpoints.

Multiplayer is great arena fps fun. although sometimes hard to find players, every weekend the community comes together for "saturday night ROTT" with a few servers and hours of fraggin' fun.

A few downsides;

The game has pretty graphics and like i said earlier, it's not perfectly optimizatized. It takes a fair rig to run it like you would want.

Buggy at times. The only time this really got to me was the NME boss fight. I fell through the floor, got stuck in the wall, and died for no reason at times during that battle, It was annoying to say the least. But like I said, that was the only time it was really an issue.

This game is really into the classic fps deal. If you didn't like other doom type fps games i can't say theres much here that will change that.

TL:DR: Awesome, challenging, classic fps that any retro fan will like. But be cautious of bugs and heavy hardware demands.
