Primary thing to take with this game is the knowledge it's a console port of a 2018 title.

Pros:
Balanced game play that's fairly straightforward in application across the board.
No way to "buy" power
A solid Gundam experience

Mixed:
Only UC timeline suits (No Gundam Wing, G Gundam, etc)
A very team oriented game. Being 1v2 in almost every scenario winds up with you dead. 1v1 really depends on the rock-paper-scissors style of balance between the suits (raid, general, support).

Cons:
Terrible servers and match making systems (crashing, disconnects) that still haven't been properly fixed.
Abysmal user interface

Update: Horrendous currency gains - This is what finally made me turn the review negative. I still think the game is enjoyable. However what I hadn't realized is they were running an event that greatly increased earnings. Now that the event is over you make such pittance in free currency that it will take an ungodly amount of hours to earn anything in the game. The game and developers simply do not respect players time. Imagine trying to earn a suit worth 50,000 in game currency but each match you only make between 100-200 of the currency. It's absolutely insulting. If you want to play the game simply login do your dailies and log off. Because it's just not worth spending tons of time for no rewards.

Original review (at launch):

As a F2P title it has the expected gimmicks that accompany it. In this case "gacha" like mechanics for spending money. But there's no real outright purchasing power and games still rely on skill. It's more about mastering the combat and utilizing all your suits weapons. They're being very generous right now with free rewards and easy to achieve completion rewards in the form of additional suits.

Yes the servers are having issues which is a concern but hopefully a short one. The games pretty fun, that being said it did release in 2018 so take that with a grain of salt when it comes to graphics.

Tired of the arcade style rules and game play of World of Tanks, Warplanes, and Warships?

Well this game definitely doesn't have that. Hey that tank shot you hiding behind a bush? Spawn in a plane or helicopter and make him regret his life choices.

Dear god one day there may be a competitor which achieves everything the snail has in this title which is a work of considerable effort. In the mean time we have to deal with War Thunder as it is.

I can't really recommend the game. I had high hopes for it at the start having followed it well before it's western release. I've always enjoyed similar titles games to this like Diablo and have always wanted a MMO version. There were previous attempts at this in the past from other Korean and Asian MMO titles but a consistent mentality to those types of games was their intense grind which turned me off of them.

While the primary grind was significantly toned down I don't appreciate the item and gem grind. I do think the game excels at maximizing it's cinematic boss fights. However the biggest things that turned me off was the absolute joke that was crafting (something I like to engage with in MMOs during down time) and the horrendous story. It was quite clear that the changes made negatively impacted the experience.

One of the big changes they made was instead of choosing your class then effectively your advanced job through a 10 level prequel story to the main game's plot. Instead you engage the island and skip all of it removing investment. Then throughout the main plot moving through the initial continent it was quite clear they cut and removed quite a bit. There was one story line about a girl looking for her sister. However the plot just ends without continuing even though you can clearly encounter her sister the NPC. The reasoning for these cuts was to rush western players to the same "endgame" as the rest of the international player base.

I genuinely wanted a similar experience the Korean player base received with some minor tweaks more suitable for western audiences since the gaming culture is different around the world. Instead what we got was a roller coaster of bad writing and dumbed down progression depositing us to endgame as quick as possible which is where the company makes it's money through microtransactions. I wouldn't recommend the game on those grounds but it is free to play so go for it if you're looking for something different.

10/19/24 Edit - Fatshark yet again sets an example of 1 step forward 2 steps back. They recently implemented a big update with "masteries" and once again broke the game removing content/etc for people. We recently came back only to find out the mastery system didn't track XP properly so weapons we primarily used have next to no mastery while ones we barely touched are very high mastery.

Second weapon buffs are tied to mastery which are part of the new crafting system. The only issue is buffs we once had access to are now removed with the new mastery system. Frankly at this point I recommend anyone to avoid buying the game.

11/22/23 Edit - Apparently the class tree's weren't complete but now are (veteran keystone abilities). They added a new map/zone but still lacking in free to purchase weapon cosmetics (still only the default red or blue stripes).

10/3/23 Edit - The game is far different now then it was at launch. The recent patch added in class trees for more customization. The game still gets a "not recommended" from me solely on the grounds it still isn't the game I was promised or the game I paid for. It looks like the developers have given up on that.

Original review:

Okay, I said no but it's more of a "Yes and No" situation. It's more of a "Wait until it's on sale, and/or maybe a year from now when all the issues are gone and there's better content" situation.

I'll start with what they did well. The music and aesthetics of the game are 100% on point. At it's core this is the kind of Warhammer 40K game we've always wanted when it comes down to not being a space marine. The basic gunplay and shooting is fairly well balanced. But that's pretty much where the good ends.

The bad issues is best summarized by my friends in that "Fat Shark (The Developer) has taken 1 step forward, then 2 steps back and fell down the stairs."

Game play Balance - There's some definite balance issues with the game. Especially when it comes to progression, as well as Psyker. Progression has issues with the rate at which you unlock "new" weapons. With weapons you unlock new "versions" of essentially the same few Autogun or Lasgun models. They make up the majority of the arsenal. The more interesting weapons are held back until late game and there's really only 1 or 2 versions of them. They also turn up extremely rarely in the in-game currency shop and the "emperor's gift" random drop is fickle at best and usually just drops a basic version.

In regards to Psyker I know myself and others mentioned it felt weak in the beta. The only thing it could do well is kill the heavily armored enemies. They did tweak it's progression from the beta giving the Psyker earlier access to it's class specific weaponry (staves) but these are limited. The Psyker was also hit with some large nerfs from the beta. I don't understand how they could nerf what was without argument the weakest class.

Edit: Psyker did get some much needed improvements. The class still has problems while leveling but once you get to level 30 it is on par with what the other classes can do.

"classes" vs "careers" - There's been much debate over how Darktide does it's classes vs the Career's in Vermintide 2. The career's in Vermintide 2 were like alternate reality versions of the core heroes when they took different life paths to their main career. The biggest issue between the games is Vermintide 2 launched with 5 different characters with 15 careers between them and over the life of it has gotten 4 free careers and 4 paid DLC careers allow a lot of varied play styles over that time. Darktide has launched with 4 characters with 1 class between them. The developers have stated they plan to release a new class every quarter (they did not specify if it's 1 for all character types or 1 for 1 character type). They also failed to state whether they will be free or paid for (possibly influence from Tencent who purchased them up just prior to release). This is one of the huge reasons I say no to recommending because their actions scream of predatory behavior.

Edit: We are months on and at least a quarter or longer from release and no additional classes of each character has been released which is another broken promise by the developers

Weapons - Edit: The developers stated there'd be 70+ weapons in the game. There are about 21 different classes of weapons in the game. Most weapons have several sub types which change up different aspects of the game but hardly count as a "different" weapon. Of Warhammer 40K specific weapons there are surprisingly few which is disappointing. That being said since launched they had added about 5+ weapon variants to the game. Though they have also taken to "balancing" certain weapons negatively which is disappointing in a non-competitive co-operative game.

Initially getting items was a very poor experience at launch. They have improved upon it some what with a mission based reward upon completion and side objectives. They also added a way to essentially "gacha" the weapon you want from the vendor though they still have the hourly rotating vendor. A continuing problem is their "special" currency vendor for weekly challenges still often has hot garbage items that are uninteresting. Each weapon has random stat rolls and you actively try to get something with a base roll over 350 ideally in the 360-70 range.

Crafting - Edit: They launched the game without crafting but now it's in the game. While I have issues with it mainly in it's use and management of resources it's not an inherently bad system. It's designed to compliment the grind aspect of the game by having to find a version of each weapon with each blessing to sacrifice it. What I don't like is how the crafting is effectively account wide (a good thing thank god) vs the inventory and items being character specific. They need to return to the shared item inventory of Vermintide 2 and simply make items unusable by your character hidden.

Cosmetics and paid money store - So I'm always in favor of "if there's going to be micro-transactions" then they be cosmetic only and Darktide follows this model. The only issue I have with their system is what you have access to in-game without real money is very limited and tied to the same currency you use to buy guns. Some cosmetics are tied to penances (which some are broken or unexplained enough the devs have made statements on. The other issue is their change from Steam based purchases to an in-game currency shop. Sadly like all premium currency systems their system is just as predatory. They've stated their reasoning but I still think it is a bad decision.

Edit: Months in I can safely say they've prioritized microtransactions poorly. They've currently placed all cosmetic releases on hold to deal with all the problems with the launch. But all the good cosmetics can only be bought from the store. The only cosmetics you can get for free you have to earn from achievements (of which ruin the experience for others when completing) to first get access to them, then having to use the in-game currency in staggering amounts to even buy a poor uninteresting recolor.

Enemies - My only issue with the games they've released is the focus on Nurgle based chaos forces. They are the bread and butter of these games. I'd like to see some more variety in the forces. Like Khorne based hordes!

TL:DR - The core game itself is solid with the basic foundations of balanced range/melee systems, music, atmosphere. But it lacks in a number of other area's. These area's are known to the developers and this is their third big game of this type but they KEEP continuing to make the same mistakes. There's absolutely no reason for this to have happened and is a massive failing on the developers part.

Edit: The only reason I still play the games is because I play it with my friends. If I am going to play something alone which would put me with random players I actively avoid this game.

I feel like after nearly 26-27 hours and playing for the first time recently I'd give me two cents.

The Good:
The game has a pretty good game play loop and a lot of variety in environments. Enemy types are a little stale in that there's only 3-4 factions to fight against but there's just enough variety. My friend recently unlocks the rail jack and I gotta say that's some of the coolest stuff we've done in awhile. I never gave Warframe a fair shot years ago and looking back on it that was a mistake. The daily login rewards aren't bad and the game occasionally throws you a bone or two (gave me a free Warframe just because at one point, not really sure why or how).

Also when using a sword the game honestly gives me Metal Gear Solid Revengeance vibes with dicing enemies up. It's honestly pretty cool. Beyond that coming into the game after there's been nearly a decade or more of content there's so much to do and it's fairly easy to get into. But beyond all the negatives I'll end up listing the actual core gameplay is pretty fun.

The bad:
The game's monetization shows it's age. It's clear from the pricing they are absolutely milking their whales as much as they can. That being said there is the occasional bundle that's actually a good deal. The other issue is the nickel and dime'n players in the sense of the old style of F2P monetization. You have to use Platinum to unlock almost everything in the game including additional weaponry and warframe slots. Thankfully this amount isn't a lot (12-20 platinum) per spots so a single purchase of a few hundred platinum can go a long way.

The other issue is time gating a lot of stuff to create incentives to spend platinum on speeding up forge research. Hey it takes 12 hours to produce each Warframe part and then an additional 72 hours to produce the Warframe itself. Luckily they do not time gate quest related things which usually only take 1-10 minutes to craft up.

I will give them credit because beyond time gating the content you can actually achieve almost everything for free the only real cost to a player is the time investment. So you'll have to decide on whether that's worth it to you.

The only other negative is unless your playing with friends who don't mind messing around the way to play the game is all about speed. I eventually was match made into a group with 2 random players and before I knew it they were halfway through the level ignoring most of what was going on.

My final issue with the game is the fact that it doesn't adequately tell you much of anything in the way or the game. It tells you that you can upgrade mods but not why it's so vital. It doesn't tell you the benefits of using forma to improve a Warframe. The menu systems can be clunky and un-intuitive as well.

TL/DR: The core gameplays fun, there's a ton to do. The bad is that no matter what at some point you will have to spend some money on the game in some way mostly in the form of convenience.

Death's Door is an interesting game inspired clearly by the Zelda franchise in it's core design. But it's world is certainly unique to say the least and the most memorable part of the game. I'd say it's worth picking up if you like the Zelda games or others like it (Tunic for example).

I would recommend this game but there's some caveats:

For Gundam enthusiasts this isn't a strictly faithful experience to the lore in the sense of 0079 Side Story for the dreamcast or a musou in the sense of the recent SD release or the old Dynasty Warriors Gundam. This is a team based hero shooter style game (overwatch, valorant). Units are designed to counter others and teamwork is necessary for victory.

Onto the good:

- Unit balancing isn't bad. Some need some minor balancing tweaks while others need buffs. Most of the time it comes down to learning how to play a unit and learning to counter others.
- Games tend to be fairly quick, you don't necessarily get bogged down in one match for too long. I've only gone into overtime in a couple matches.
- It's only been a few months since the network test and they added 3 additional units to unlock in addition to the 2 that were new from the Network test. This bodes well for content addition over time.

The Mixed
- Maps are a little bland in design, but also have some unique features. In the sense some choke points in the map can be completely negated by the transforming units (Asshimar and Methuss) can simply fly over and flank. I haven't seen too many people use this but it's definitely interesting from a game play stand point.
- Some of the best and coolest cosmetics are tied strictly behind the paid battle pass or paid loot boxes (both of which don't become purchasable for another day) with no way to earn these in game. But there's also some very solid cosmetics you can earn in-game.
- There's 3 currency systems in the game and no description in-game on two which is a oversight by the developers. The blue currency is for unlocking units, green is generated by duplicate cosmetic items received from loot boxes, and obviously the premium currency.

The bad
- The blue currency which is used to unlock new units comes only from a leveling track and challenges. This is also time gated by subsequent login days. This is preventing players from unlocking the new units at a decent pace and directs them to purchase these unlocks with real money (which they can't actually do currently). It's not the cleanest or nicest way to do a F2P unlock system.
- The rate at which you get tickets for loot boxes is significantly slower then other F2P titles. Considering how similar this is to Overwatch (and I mean similar) I expected to get loot crates fairly quickly but you get these things drip fed to you.
Edit (11/1/22): While still a problem they've added additional supply pod tickets to the end levels of the battle pass. Still isn't a great solution but it's a nice addition.
- There is some problems with connectivity in the game and there is a punishment system that applies to casual games as well (normally these systems only effect ranked matchmaking). This is obviously causing problems for people when they get disconnected and then punished for it.
Edit: They had since fixed Casual vs Ranked Match Making to fix this problem.

TL:DR, Not a bad experience and it's pretty fun. It's nice to have a easily accessible team based Gundam game for many people. I can see this game lasting if they make some adjustments here and there while keeping content (maps and Units) coming at a decent pace.

I had a cult follower be suspicious of a newer member. Ultimately had me put him in jail. Once I realized he was innocent I sacrificed the accuser during the next ritual.

10/10 would recommend.

So let's put this out there. I would actually recommend this game, it's overall very good. But the Developer has made sudden changes to the game that has drastically ruined and changed the experience. What's more, they flat out have minimized support as they pursue the release of their next title. But let's get into specifics:

First, the base game is solid and the DLCs are pretty good except for Winds of Magic. WoM should be picked up on sale as the only reason to get that DLC is access to the new weapons and minor cosmetic items. That game mode is effectively dead. The base game itself is solid and has some replayability in the forms of difficulty and trying to upgrade your items.

The big draw for me and my friends is when they added the free Chaos Wastes mode. A type of roguelite experience where you move through a branching map. This mode is for me what's given the game it's real longevity. The problem is the massive changes in the recent Be'Lakor update. The developer has been keen to make drastic changes to the games economy and randomization that has made the mode without argument worse. They have made no statements regarding the changes after feedback either. This is a free mode and I do not want to sound ungrateful, but having played it for so long only for it to be completely altered is just wrong.

The developers have also pushed back the long awaited 5th career for one of the characters until their next games release. This is something that would help fans in the next few months while waiting for that next game. But instead we received an update that broke the game. Any developer who so willingly breaks their game and refuses to communicate on it I feel means I need to warn others about spending their money.

So the TL:DR, great game, developers have been making changes that have been ruining the experience. If they ever fix these new problems or at least communicate about the changes I'll update this review.

Careful when you start, a lot of time will go by without you realizing it. Definitely worth the money.

Edit: Since the cost will change on release I updated it not to confuse people.
