Japan, you crazy.

I don’t even have the words to describe this game, except maybe wonderful? On the surface it’s a cute little RPG. When you start playing, you quickly realize it’s extreme depth. Then you go adventuring…

I’ve been stoned to death by a nun in an orphanage for singing to the kids as she tells me I “Sing like s**t”. 10/10, I’m hooked.

Interesting story, terrible combat.

The game plays statwise an progression wises like Disco Elysium. However, the combat is just bad. Your characters progress via armor, feats, and implants. They then have a slow progression by doing things in combat... but it's randomized who and seemly how much they get. However, outside of armor and evasion the HP pools don't increase.

This leads to the game essentially being built around save scuming because the RNG can allow for a character to be killed before you even get a chance to act. This experience was on the underdog setting, but it doesn't poor design.

Edit for reply to Dev: Appreciate the reply! At least in my two runs, the log after the fight showed no skill point gains for characters that were shot at, shot with, etc. Even when they did the gains are very small for the amount of hits given and taken.

The experience of getting slaughtered turn one happened were always with either a energy shield or distortion field. Energy shield (at least in it's early stages) feels useless. The first energy armor you get seems to mechanically work, but the energy shield far too much damage straight bypasses it. If you pop stims on a weaker character first round, the enemies just shift to the next weakest character. So you end up popping several stims to cover everyone and then it's race till debuff. Grenades work, if the enemy is susceptible to them which mindworms aren't.

The save scumming need feels escalated by the scars mechanic. If you get to turn 4-5 and a character goes down from lucky hits (because they focus fire on the most susceptible) it's basically an auto start over. No sense in dragging forward a permanent debuff, especially when it's HP.

I'm sure it's possible, plenty seem to enjoy it. I guess I'm just just more of a movement and action use strategy than a mandatory consumables strategy person.

Is it a fun game? Of course. Is it worth of a recommendation? No.

The game severely lacks polish which takes away from all of its better components.

- The clunky combat animations and comical pathing take away from what is a mechanically beautiful battle simulation.

- Talking with characters leads to the same voice acting over and over while the characters look like a skibidi toilet animation. Both take away from the great design work on towns, taverns, and keeps.

- The in depth management of settlements is spoiled by poor balance of those mechanics (looking at you ridiculous loyalty)

- The diversity of units is spoiled by the terrible UI that gives zero information about said units.

- The writing… oh my the writing. Nothing good on that front.

So close to a solid game, but if feels like the devs just went “meh, good enough”.

Circling back to review this one.

An absolute gem of a game. Survival crafter meets Zelda-esc storytelling. Well worth a play-thorugh if only for the piecemeal "discover as you go" story telling.

30 hours in the game feels fantastic. Beautiful pixel graphics, wonderful storytelling, well written characters, and extremely solid game mechanics. Devs should be very proud of what they have created.

Wonderful game so far if you like gathering. crafting, and base building. If you are joining for PvP and combat, let it cook longer.

While the style and graphics won't be for everyone, this game is a masterclass of it's genre. Well written and engaging to the very end. Don't go in with any expectations. Just play and enjoy.

Pokemon: Survival Evolved.

Meant in the best way possible because it melds the best best aspects of both games into a unique beautiful gem.
