Finally, another game besides Baldur's Gate that knocked it out of the park this year.

The name's fairly generic, but this is a legitimately excellent game, solo or in duo coop. It could be called Tin Foil Chewer Saga 8: My Dentist Has Had Enough for all I care, it's likely the best FPS game coming out this year.

Players control gun-toting robot classes that unlock over time and battle through a campaign of themed, randomly generated levels while blowing apart scores of robots, collecting experience, currencies (both short term run currency and long term upgrade currency), perks and weapons.

There's a wide variety of guns—you may end up with Hanzo's bow from Overwatch, a bolter from Warhammer 40K, maybe the silkiest smoothest AWP you've ever laid your hands on—and the game is hucking them at you at such a pace that even the worst luck is surmountable. Guns will have specific stats as a base, but these are augmented with random attributes and alt-fires that can roll on them, which can alter a familiar gun significantly. Somehow they managed to prevent the plethora of guns from feeling "samey" despite all these factors, which is an achievement considering how often Borderlands struggles with that. The game's a joy to play.

Classes are dolled out over the course of the game, which shake up gameplay even more. The game stats out narrow, but within a few hours things gradually open up, with a ton of syngergies that can emerge between discovered (or purchased) perks, and the gun lottery and class abilities.

Superb as is—looking forward to what these folks cook up in the future.
