Absolutely worth the cost. Here's my take on the game, and a thorough explanation of who would enjoy this game and who wouldn't:

Rust is a very intense game, and you always have to be on your toes to play. Most of the time, you will only progress by fighting other players and winning those fights, or sometimes fighting AIs that are basically just bots. Rust requires a lot of time to play and master, and there will always be someone better than you in the server. This game also requires a high level of awareness and focus, I've had a hard time listening to music while playing this game as sound cues are very important in this game.

People are not wrong that you can and will get addicted to Rust, it's almost likely a gambling addiction; it sucks to lose, but it feels amazing to win. Once you can consistently win fights, or get a large team, it will almost feel like you're on top of the world, and that's why people enjoy Rust so much.

The first time playing, besides being temporarily flashed once you open your inventory, is honestly a great experience if you pick the right server (I would recommend a lower population server, especially if it wiped recently). The freedom in this game feels awesome, you can do whatever you want. Want to start a hotel? You can do it. Farm some corn you found by a river? You can do it. This game has so many fine details that just make sense, and it leads to a very positive first experience. Also, for people who like scenic games, Rust has amazing world graphics.

Rust gets consistent updates, always the first Thursday of each month, 2 PM EST. Each update, every server wipes all progress you have made besides blueprints (depends on the server). Some servers also wipe every week, every 2 weeks, and a few don't ever wipe.

Overall, I would recommend Rust to anyone who likes extreme competitive gameplay, learnable gunplay, and anyone who enjoys scenic/RP games. This game has something for everyone, whether you are a creative builder, a skilled electrician, a chad pvper, or a humble farmer. No matter who you are, you will 100% get something out of this game.
