Buy the game. There's no need to read the reviews, it's an absolutely fantastic game!

If you're wondering if you can play this alone, the answer is no. You need a friend, but fortunately you only need one copy of the game, and the friend pass, which is 100% free. You can do this over the internet or locally on the couch, it's your choice!

For the longest of time, Resident Evil 5 was my favourite co-op experience. Something to have dumb fun and to try new ways to play the game with my friend. But now, this game may have taken that title and ran with it. Incredibly fun, gorgeous visual, genuinely funny jokes and writing, and gameplay that constantly keeps changing and is a joy to play every time, for a very lengthy 14 hours of game time. The story is simple, yet takes you on a huge adventure to solve these couple's quarrel. The world truly feels massive (Mostly because you're very small), with everyday appliances becoming obstacles, tools, and even bosses to overcome. The game cleverly uses areas from around the house to transport us to completely new environments without feeling shoehorned in for the sake of a winter world or a water world, they feel like they belong in this game.

The characters are lovable. The main two protagonists have witty banter, throwing jabs at each other during platforming, the minigames that are sprinkled across the whole game, and slow moments where they remember some of their past times together. There are times where they have questionable decisions to fix their problem, and the easy solution to their problem they can't figure it out until the end of the adventure. Of course it's for the sake of story telling, but it does irk a little bit. This doesn't ruin my experience with the two characters, I think they're enjoyable when they're having fun, and are silly when they get competitive or argue with each other.
Another character who I enjoyed is Dr Hakim, the talking book that sends you on this wild goose chase of an adventure. Wildly entertaining and animated, the developers waste no time to make it obvious who Dr Hakim is. From his goofy expression to his overly energetic dances and movements. There's never a dull moment with this book, specially when the couples argue with him. These characters will leave you smiling when they're on screen together.

The gameplay as I mentioned before, is constantly changing. New movesets and tools are given to you right after another, and they're constantly coming up with new ways to use these movesets to solve creative puzzles, challenging platforms and boss fights. Just when you thought they've ran out of ideas, out comes a new tool! And then another! Without spoiling too much, the first tools you get is a hammer and a set of nails. The hammer is typically used to break down things like glass bottles, but is also used to swing across platforms, catapult off of springs, and pulling up nails to create new paths. The set of nails I found really fun. They're used like javelins where you throw them at walls to stick them, allowing the player with the hammer to swing across pit falls. They're also used to hold down platforms to move across, or even to hold down enemies for an open attack. What I really enjoy about these tools is one small detail. Generally in games, something like a hammer is given to the heavy weight character, and something agile and light like the set of nails, is given to characters who are slim and fast. So to see the slim female character carry the hammer, and the large male character use the nails was a breath of fresh air, to have broken a trend like that.

It Takes Two (at the time of writing this review was the name of the game) is a beautifully crafted game that was cared for, and wasn't blinded by unfinished deadlines, the use of micro-transactions, or hiring big name voice actors in hopes to sell the game. It stood on it's own feet and truly shows that the team put in every love and talent into this game. I was looking for a game to play co-op with my friend, and instead of having a simple fun game to try out, I ended up discovering my new favourite game of all time. Without a doubt The Best Co-op experience I have ever played, and I think it's going to be difficult to find a game to top this one. There's something for everyone in this game; it's got great platforming, beautiful scenarios, classic jokes, fun silly side minigames and interactions, and a heartfelt story that ties this whole game up with a lovely red bow.

Game of the Year, hands down.
