Trials Rising is everything you love about "Trials" combined with everything that you hate about where the industry has shifted towards over the last decade.

While this game has a poor reputation for its loot boxes (purely cosmetics) and ghosts (easily disabled) --- the biggest downfall for Rising would have to be the stupid Challenge system.

Previous Trials games were more linear... accumulate 'X' amount of medals and you will unlock the next batch of levels. If you're unfortunate enough to achieve Gold's on your first playthrough, Trials Rising will eventually force you to complete a bunch of mindless "Challenges" to level up. Otherwise, you will literally be stuck. The challenges force you to complete random stipulations, such as completing a track within 90 seconds while performing 10 backflips. The next level might require completing the track with a specific bike, and so forth.

Despite my play time on Steam, I've actually logged 10 hours on the PS5; I love the game and wish I could play MORE levels, but I'm burned out. If you do not purchase the Expansion Pass, you will easily get to a point where you can no longer unlock anything within 2-4 hours --- and the highest track difficulty is MEDIUM. I'm actually up to level 53, and I have still not unlocked a single Hard or Ninja track.

There are several Skill Games, and I believe one "tutorial" track is also locked. I'm literally forced to re-play levels... not because *I* want to shave milliseconds from my PB's, or to beat someone else's PB's in my Friends List. No... I have re-play levels and complete whatever mundane "Challenge" the game has generated... grinding away to slowly level up.

It's a shame, because this is otherwise a great game and would have been my favorite Trials game if it simply had a more traditional, linear progression system that allowed me to unlock more stages. I ended up purchasing the game on Steam to support the developer and I hope another Trials game eventually hits the market.

Also, despite recent reviews, the game absolutely still runs as of the time of this review.

If you're a fan of Trials, check it out... on sale. Be prepared to purchase the Expansion Pass, as well. Otherwise, you're only getting a few hours of gaming and a few dozen Easy and Medium tracks until you're forced to grind out the same levels over... and over... and over... and over... and over... and over....

and over...

Fun.

Looking for a game that you can play in short bursts, or even grind without feeling like you're achievement hunting or speedrunning? Well, this is your game. I hate to beat a dead horse with the comparisons but this game takes the bullet-time and chaos from Max Payne... the bullet hell from Enter The Gungeon... the controls of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater... the skill gap and adrenaline of Rocket League... slaps it into a horde mode... and... it... it just works.

Great soundtrack, and aesthetically pleasing, as well.

The game itself is simple enough to button mash your way through the early levels, but it gets progressively difficult and you're forced to actually fuse a few brain cells together. The campaign "technically" requires you to farm challenges to unlock the next set of levels. However, they are not difficult to do and the levels feel easier every time you beat them. You're also not required to beat the stage to retain your completion of each challenge, so you can easily go in with a few objectives each run and bail if you wish.

The game can be hectic and overwhelming without many checkpoints, but it's also forgiving. If you just want to mow through the Campaign, go into the settings and disable the Challenges requirement. If you can't beat a level, they have a Game Genie... or for the younger audience, Celeste-esque "Assist Mode" setting to enable invincibility and unlimited ammo among other things. If you want to 100% the game... well, git good.

I've yet to beat the game, but I would only call out two gripes. Bullet inventory... you may have 3 weapons in your wheel with full ammo, yet they all share the same magazine. For example, if I have 6 bullets in my (dual) pistol, 2 shotgun shells, and 1 grenade, emptying my dual pistols, means I've somehow lost my shotgun shells and grenade?

My other gripe would be that there are some boss fights along the way that took a bit of trial and error to figure out due to a lack of visual cues. I've literally done laps for several minutes, being chased by endless heat-guided missiles before the strategy finally "clicked". Perhaps that was user error?

Checkpoints, and perhaps an Endless Mode with randomly generated enemies would be a welcomed addition.

Either way, fantastic experience and I would not mind an expansion in some capacity.

The vague "6 DLCs" that the Season Pass includes are:

After The Incident
Fault One Zero
Fire In The Deep
Welcome To The Abyss
Empire of the Sky
Riders of the Rustland
