Brain usually compensates the poor connectivity with overgrowing brain regions responsible for pattern recognition, logic and attention to detail. That doesn't mean most of autistic people are inherently "Smart", you can have supreme pattern recognition abilities, and still have the overall sentience of a potato. In a way, the autistic brain trades "Wisdom" (integration) for "Knowledge" (data). While you can be high-functioning autistic person, autistic people are not high-functioning human beings.
