It's a "good" game. The worst part about it are it's battle systems that try to ruin it. The drawing mechanic incentives to not use, but stockpile mass amounts of spells that the use of lower your stats through the junction system, which replaces equipment/accessories from earlier titles. Guardian forces are a good mechanic, a great step up from FF6's espers, but it does make all the playable party feel the same other than their limit moves. Guardian forces is how your party will use/learn abilities such as mug, encounter-none, etc. which again is hindered by the draw mechanic to fully open up their potential. You know a game has missed it's mark when the optional card game within itself is the best part of the whole experience. 8 is a great time, if not a tad monotonous by the 15-20 hour mark, especially if going for all achievements. FF7 and 9 are more worth your time for the PS1 era games.
