This is the oldest example I've found of a "Mass Effect type" game. Although since this predates Mass Effect, perhaps Anachronox could be considered a first of it's kind? This game resembles the bioware take on RPGs so much that playing it gave me a kind of false nostalgia- a fondness for my memories playing and replaying KOTOR 1 and 2 and being blissfully ignorant to the primitive graphics and janky controls.

The characters in this are strange and hilarious, it's like a kids show from the 90's or something, cartoony and fun. But the game suffers from its age, the quests required to move forward can be tedious or confusing. There's a really unique primary mechanic of the game that uses your cursor as a way to interact, i don't know if i've seen any game expand on those ideas, actually..

If you want more like Mass Effect or KOTOR, try this out. It's older but you travel space with a cast of characters.

EDIT: the hours it shows is INCORRECT, most of my playthrough was offline.
