Ethnicity — The Iraqi Turks are a Turkic ethnic group, largely identifying with Turkish heritage and culture.

Homeland — The term "Turkmeneli" translates to "Land of the Turkmens." Regions encompassing Turkmeneli include Kirkuk, Tel Afar, Mandali, Mosul, Tuz Khormato, Erbil, Salah ad-Din, and Kirkuk.

Population — As of 2013, data from the Iraqi Ministry of Planning estimated the Iraqi Turkmen population to be 3 million, within Iraq's total population of 34.7 million. However, it's worth noting that some believe these figures may be underestimated due to potential biases in the Iraqi source.

History —Iraqi Turkmens trace their ancestry to various phases of Turkic migration into Mesopotamia, beginning in the 7th century and lasting until the culmination of Ottoman rule in 1919. The initial wave of migration began in the 7th century. Subsequent migrations occurred during the reign of the Seljuk Empire (1037–1194), the exodus of the Oghuz Turks during the Mongol obliteration of the Khwarazmian dynasty (as observed in the Kara Koyunlu and Ag Qoyunlu dynasties), and, most prominently, during the period of the Ottoman Empire (1535-1919). The Ottoman era witnessed Suleiman the Magnificent's conquest of Iraq in 1534 and Sultan Murad IV's capture of Baghdad in 1638, leading to a significant settlement of Turks, primarily from Anatolia, in Iraq. Consequently, a majority of contemporary Iraqi Turkmens are descendants of the Ottoman soldiers, traders, and bureaucrats who migrated to Iraq during the Ottoman rule.
