Something special happened in the early 80s. During a time when glam metal threatened to take over the sound waves and wrap metal in tights and glitter, a handful of underground bands influenced by the energetic rhythms of NWOBHM and fuelled by the intensity of hardcore punk came to a boil. They were harder, faster, and rougher than anything anyone had ever seen, and most importantly, they were furious. Thrash metal had been born, and with it came a time when metal evolved, diversified, and took music by storm with virtuoso talent and just the right amount of attitude.

At the helm were bands like Megadeth, Exodus, and Slayer from the Bay Area scene, where thrash had arguably started. In time, prominent scenes would also rise in the eastern US with Overkill and Anthrax, in Germany with Kreator and Sodom, in Brazil with Sepultura and Sarcófago, in Canada with Razor and Sacrifice, and in several other places around the world. As it became more technical and polished with bands such as Voivod and Coroner pushing the limits of the genre, thrash soon became a musical force to be reckoned with and landmark releases were dropped left and right.

Even through a slump in the 90s, thrash musicians had left their mark. They had a tremendous influence on metal and rock as a whole, popularising techniques such as tremolo picking, sweep picking, and double-bass drumming. Metal production became more polished, amps became heavier, and bands like Bathory, Death, and Possessed had built on the sound to spawn the early black metal and death metal scenes, leading to further evolution in the metal genre. Today, thrash is again alive and kicking, with pioneers and newcomers alike doing what they do best.
