Free Unusual Raffle!

No, just kidding, that was to get you to look. This is a message about an increased number of phishers on Steam. Aphisher is someone who attampts to get your Steam infomation (username, password, ID key, etc.) to take over your account. The most recent method people have of doing this is friending you, then messaging you claiming their friend wants to trade with you, and gving a link to a fake steam URL. The URL has only a slight difference from the real Steam website, and the webpage is designed to look just like the real deal. The site tells you that in order to get to the (fake) profile page you are trying to get to, you must login to Steam with your username and password. Following this, you need to provide the code that gets emailed to you to allow access to a new computer. The phisher now has everything he needs to take over your account. What he might do with it varies, but it is definitely not in the user's best intetrests.

How to Recognize it
1: When you click on a link in steam to a steam site (i.e. a profile page) it will open the window in Steam, NOT a browser window.

2: When clicking any URL, make sure it is spelled correctly, people use tricks such as rn instead of m, and n instead of m, and just plain mispell "Steam Community".

3: If you do get to the page where you are supposed to enter your login credentials, there should be a green lock icon next to the page URL. This indicates that the login is protected by Steam's own login protector. If this does not appear, do not enter your login information. IT IS A FAKE!

How to Stop it
1: The easiest way is to go to the phisher's profile page on Steam, click the "more" button at the top, and report them, using a quote of their chat or a screenshot.

2: A more difficult but more effective way is to follow the URL link. Once you get there, you must find the provider off the website builder. If you can do that, then you can report the phisher's website to the company, since it is almost certianly against the company's acceptable use policy, whoch is in those tems and conditions you accept but never read.

*note* Make sure the person you are reporting is actually a phisher, we don't need or want innocent steam users being banned, blocked, etc. because of your mistake.
