When for a mortal soul the harsh day fades away,
And onto city streets of silent
There'll fall translucent and nocturnal midnight shades
Along with slumber - daily toil prize
This is the time for me when silent hours drag
Drag on and on in wakeful vigil
In nightly bumming, oh, there sparkle up again
The qualms of heart like serpent evil
The dreams boil o'er, the mind all burdened with annoyance
Is cramp with grievous thoughts abundance
Remembrance then mutely in my face
Unrolls and waves its scroll of endless
And reading all my life with nothing but disgust
I agonize and merely curse life
And lament woefully and shed my tears aghast
But never wash I off these sad lines
