ABOUT Germanic Paganism

Hail Óðinn! Hail Freyr! Hail Þórr! Hail Frigg! Hail Freyja! Hail Sól! Hail the Æsir!

General Information
Germanic Polytheism is one of the largest Polytheistic Traditions due to the relevance of it to the English-speaking world, which has had the most significant shifts in religious discourse and practice in the last one hundred years (especially with the New Age movement). The most common names for the faith are Ásatrú meaning "faithful to the gods", Forn Sed meaning "the old customs, old path", and Heathenry, whose etymology is disputed. I personally prefer the term Forn Sed for the religious tradition, and Asatruar for an adherent of the religion. Some of the many symbols of Germanic Polytheism include Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor; Yggdrasil, the tree of life; and the Valknut, a symbol whose origin is disputed but is believed to be associated with Óðinn.

Useful Resources
Heimskringla[heimskringla.no] offers all of the Old Norse sources in their original text & various Scandinavian languages.

Norse Mythology for Smart People[norse-mythology.org] is a great resource in general and has its own reading list, and the author of the website's two works are listed on my own reading list.

The Viking Society of Northern Research[vsnrweb-publications.org.uk] is a wonderful organization for the study of Old Norse literature and the Viking Age at large. Several translations of just about everything found on Heimskringla can be found here, in English, though it may appear archaic to most.

For an English Translation of the Poetic Edda and Volsung Saga, I suggest Jackson Crawford's Poetic Edda and his Saga of the Volsungs.

Additional Information
Many are not aware that the same 'Norse' Gods were worshiped throughout the Germanic world by the ancestors of the Dutch, Germans, Austrians, and English (Anglo-Saxons), under different names and with some variation of beliefs, lore, and so on, dependent upon time and place. This server is for the discussion of all local traditions/variations of the greater Germanic Tradition. It is suggested that if you hold an aversion to paganism that you leave. Bans will be handed out for non-constructive insults, trolling, etc.
