King Edward VIII ascended the British throne in 1936 but abdicated the same year. The reason was his deep love for Wallis Simpson, an American woman who had been divorced twice.

Edward met Wallis in the 1930s and fell deeply in love with her. However, the British government and the Church opposed their relationship, as it was deemed inappropriate for a king to marry a divorced woman. Faced with a choice between love and duty, Edward chose love and abdicated the throne in December 1936, passing the crown to his brother, King George VI.

Edward and Wallis married in 1937 and remained together for the rest of their lives. They were given the titles "Duke and Duchess of Windsor" and spent most of their lives in Europe.
