It's with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our dear friend, Gumby. It's easy to think of online friends as lesser companions in our lives. Understandably, I think a lot of people who don't play games might look at it that way. However, those of us who develop friendships with those we game with are selecting just a handful of people in this world who we seek out when we want to be ourselves.

Our co-workers, social friends, and even our family members, are people who we usually step away from at the end of the day so we can unwind. When we want to be who we are, we find our online friends. Through those friends, we share our lives, struggles, pain, and joy that we likely wouldn't share with many others.

Gumby was present for all of my kids growing from infancy. He heard them giggling on my lap or in a baby bouncer on my desk as we played. Gumby got to talk to them when they first spoke, and marveled at their growth when they started to be able to chat him up. Eventually, Gumby became a friend to them too, playing Rust, Halo, Minecraft, and PalWorld together. Some days, I was too tired to jump in a game with my kids, but Gumby wouldn't hesitate - and engaged them like a close family member.

The people who I know best, are unofficially family to my kids. At this stage of life, there's no greater determinant of a person I love and trust as who I will let my children interact with. Gumby was an uncle in our home, the subject of dinner conversations, and a person we loved.

Gumby will be missed, maybe more so than some of us expected, because he was always there, without demanding to be noticed. And now, more than ever we notice him, because his absence is deafening.
