The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or simply Puerto Rico, was first ceced to the United States along with Guam, the Phillipines and Cuba after the U.S defeated Spain during the Spanish-American War. The Commonwealth between the U.S and P.R was established in 1952. Under the United States, Puerto Rico went from being under the United States military rule to having the ability to vote for their own govenor.
