Nach dem Krieg traf er Charles Xavier und freundete sich mit ihm an, bis ihre verschiedenen Ansichten dazu führten, dass er zum gefährlichsten Widersacher der X-Men wurde. Im Gegensatz zu Xavier, der an ein friedliches Zusammenleben von Menschen und Mutanten glaubt, ist Magneto davon überzeugt, dass die Verfolgung von Mutanten nur dann ein Ende haben wird, wenn die menschliche Rasse komplett besiegt sein wird.

Er bewies, dass er hochentwickelte Kenntnisse über Genmutation und Maschinenbau besitzt, und ließ Menschen mithilfe von Strahlung mutieren. Hat wenig Interesse und Wertschätzung gegenüber Nicht-Mutanten.
