Here's a suggestion: Let's try to use the group chat to find Portal 2 co-op partners. IM'ing around will probably just annoy people, and hanging around in group chat is the most reasonable substitute for a "looking for players" flag I can think of.

Has anybody tried that new free-to-play Gotham City Imposters game? (I know it's only new to Steam, but still.) Might be an acceptible compromise between TF2 and Payday/L4D2.

John Teti just started up an AVC spinoff that's all games, all the time. It's called The Gameological Society, it's conveniently located at http://gameological.com , and it is a thing of sheer majestic beauty. You should visit it soon and often.
