Cold vapor rises from your face as you exhale--the cold wind whistling as it passes through the trees around you. Branches crackle, and your comrades cough and sneeze during the long patrol.

The desert heat beats down, each sticky step leaving bootprints of melted plastic on the hot pavement. Dogs yip in the background as the recon detachment to your north barks out potential Taliban positons over the radio. Any of your 10,000 steps today could be your last.

"We have enemy fire 600 meters to the northeast. Requesting CAS...grid-coords 09751755...300 meters NE of yellow smoke." - radio requests from the ground chatter echo in a hollow muffled tone through your ground comms channel. Everything is quiet at 5,000 AGL, and for the most part you won't be engaged by AA. Peering over the left side of your cockpit you rock your wings counterclockwise and spot the yellow smoke rising from the Earth. You're too high up to see the tracers, but you can see dust rising from the heavy weapons.
