How-to altPUG
Introduction
Greetings! The altPUG Singapore Steam group has already reached 100 members! Congratulations to us :)!

After playing a couple games yesterday, I noticed that many of our members are not accustomed to the altPUG system. In this post I will show a detailed "How-To" altPUG.

Installing & Setting-Up altPUG

1. Creating an altPUG Account
The first and foremost step before starting anything is to create an altPUG account. To create an altPUG account go to http://www.altpug.com/ and register!

2. Getting the altPUG Client
Now that you have an altPUG account, you'll need the actual client! To download the client either go to http://www.altpug.com/ or use this link for a direct download: http://www.altpug.com/Client/Download

Once downloaded and installed, make sure to login on the client!

3. Getting the maps (optional)
Before you play, you'll want to make sure you have the altPUG maps!

You can view them/subscribe them by visiting the altPUG Map Workshop page.

Please note this is optional. If you do not have the maps, it will automatically download when you connect to the server/map (although this may take awhile).

Playing altPUG Matches

1. Gathering Players
For an altPUG match to begin, you'll need 10 players in the server. By using our group chat channel, IRC channel, or comments page gather 10 players and enter the server.

As our group currently has over 100 members and a constant 30+ online, gathering 10 players should never take too long!

2a. Joining the Server
Once you start getting about 3-4 willing to play, connecting to the server and warming-up to pass time might be a good idea!

To connect to the altPUG Singapore server, you'll need to connect through either the altPUG client or the altPUG website.

2b. Setting up the Server
In the occasion that either the Singapore server is currently not up, or the server is currently full, you'll have to set-up or "create" another server.

You can do this from the altPUG website, server list[altpug.com] page. On the top right you'll see an option to create a server. Click on it, select Singapore, and create!

Please note that you can only create one server for every half hour.

*Creating a server can take up to 8 minutes. If you are the first person to start the altPUG gather and there is currently no server available, it is advisable to create the server before people begin to gather.

3. Inside The Server
Unlike the CS:GO Official Competition matches, the altPUG match does not automatically start at the end of the warm-up period. Instead, it requires that all 10 players to "ready-up" and select a match before the match begins.

altPUG In-Game Commands:
  • .ready - Used to signal that you are "ready" to play. Failure to ready-up in time will lead to an automatic kick from the server.
  • .map - Used to vote for the match map. Upon typing of this command, a list will show up of all available maps. Press the map's corresponding number to vote.
  • .dmg - This command will show a damage report.
  • .players
  • .stats - This command will show the altPUG stats of an individual player. The syntax is ".stats <playername>". For instance ".stats kang". Or for myself, ".stats me".
  • .version - I'm assuming this shows the current altPUG version.
  • .need - This is an unique feature that can be used to find players for a match. By using this command, players who have the altPUG client running on their computer will receive a pop-up showing that an altPUG server requires more players.
  • +buddy - This command can be used to send accept a buddy request while in-game. The syntax is "+buddy <playername>. For instance, "+buddy kang". Likewise, this same command can be used to accept a buddy request.
  • -buddy - I'm assuming you would use this command to remove a buddy.
  • +block - I'm assuming you would use this command to block a player.
  • -block - I'm assuming you would use this command to unblock a player.
  • .help - This command will show you all available commands (same as this list).

4. The Match
The actual match can be divided into 4 sections.
  • 1. Pre-Game/Map Selection
  • 2. First-Half
  • 3. Half-Time
  • 4. Second-Half

1. Pre-Game/Map Selection
The match will not begin until there are 10 players in the server, and all 10 players have issued the .ready command. Please note that failure to .ready within the first minute or so of connecting will result in being kicked from the server.

During the pre-game/warm period, players who already in the server can vote for the map (before the official vote). Players issue the .map command and then select the map.

Once all 10 players are in the server and ready, an official map vote begins for 15 seconds. Players who have not yet voted (or players who wish to change their vote) can do so now. Once the vote is complete, the server will change to the selected map.

Upon map change, all players will have to .ready again. Once all 10 players are ready, the match will begin.

2. First-Half
Nothing of importance to say here. A single round is a minute and forty-five seconds, with the C4 timer being thirty-five seconds.

Unfortunately, friendly fire is disabled.

3. Half-Time
Once the first half is complete, players will automatically switch sides. To begin the second half, all then players will have to .ready again.

Please note that unless there are 10 players the game will not begin.

Substitute players are allowed.

4. Second-Half
The game ends when one team reaches 16 rounds won first.

Conclusion

Hopefully this guide will be useful for first-timers!

If any questions or suggestions, please feel free to comment!
