In this video, you'll find engine sounds which are chosen based on acceleration (rather than speed), and tire squeals based on whether the car is moving sideways.

The sounds aren't great right now, I threw them together kinda quickly. It sounds a bit weird, especially at 0:25 (when rapidly moving between decelerating and accelerating), but that's something that could be smoothed out with scripting and by editing the sounds more carefully.
