In South Africa, shebeens are informal, local bars. Imagine a speakeasy, but with more corrugated iron and less pinstripe and tommy guns.

The word, incidentally, comes from the Irish, but quite why the Xhosa and Zulu have adopted it quite so enthusiastically is unclear.
