When steam page is open, look on the right-low part of the page where you see your profile picture. You will see (VIEW FRIENDS LIST) <--- Click on this... It will open a box with your friends from steam. Just below the search (text box) you see 2 tabs (Friends + Groups) click on the groups tab. Now you see differents groups you joined, find the Pit group called and click on the [ + ] at the left of the group name. Now you see all players in the group and also their status (in a game; away; off-line...) When a player is offline, there is no way to send him a private msg if he's not a friend of you in steam. For any other status, you can find the player you want to send a message, at the right side of his name, there is an arrow pointing down <--- (click on it) it will show the option you can do. (click on send message) Now you oppened a chat box with that player and can live chat with him.

If you in a game and see a pop-up of an instant message, you can always press (Shift+TAB) and it will go into steam menu without closing your game or switch to windows... then you can see your message and reply to it quickly. To get back to the game, click again (Shift+TAB) and you can continue what you were doing.
