@nikheizen: you described it the wrong way. Should be instead: "Steam isn't free software and therefore isn't open source". Said differently: open source does not necessarily imply freedom (to copy, redistribute, etc.).
As to your question ("why a steam group?"), I'm not the creator of this group, so I can't answer you in their name, but my view is that a Steam group dedicated to GNU is one of many ways to advocate for free software. Just as you could find anti-FB pages on FB itself :)
