Tragedy in Norway | Unreasonable Faith

Norwegians are mourning the victims of a massacre at an island youth camp and a bombing in the capital Oslo.

At least 85 people died when a gunman opened fire at the Utoeya camp on Friday, hours after a blast in the government quarter killed seven. Another four are missing on the island.

The attacker, Anders Behring Breivik, has been identified as a right-wing Christian from Norway, so we can at least rule out the usual suspect of Islamic terrorism. Breivik has been arrested and will supposedly be talking to authorities. From the NYT:

As stunned Norwegians grappled with the deadliest attack in the country since World War II and a shocking case of homegrown terrorism, a portrait began to emerge of the suspect, Anders Behring Breivik, 32. He was described as a religious, gun-loving Norwegian obsessed with what he saw as the threat of multiculturalism and Muslim immigration to the cultural and patriotic values of his country.

Naturally, the journalists and police are picking over everything the attacker has left in the public sphere looking for some way to make sense of this. MSNBC reports:

Deputy police chief Roger Andresen declined to comment on the possible motive for the killings, but said: “We have no more information than … what has been found on (his) own websites, which is that is goes toward the right (wing) and that it is, so to speak, Christian fundamentalist.”

Other people have pointed out that what Breivik has produced is more anti-Muslim than fundamentalist Christian. While the two frequently travel together, it’s not necessarily the case here.

Al-Jazeera suggests that it’s too easy to dismiss some atrocities as the act of a “madman” when the attacker doesn’t fit our model of a terrorist. There’s enough venom is the extreme right to account for acts like this. It will be interesting to see whether the media continues to call the attacker a “terrorist” or slips into calling him something else.
