The cohortes praetoriani (Latin meaning Praetorian Cohorts) of ancient Rome were the most elite warriors Rome had at her disposal. Everyone in ancient Rome from the poorest man to the Emperor himself feared power of the Praetorian Guard with good reason. The Guard was known for its brutality, its merciless reputation, and even had a taste for conspiracy. Numerous times did the Praetorian Guard murder Emperors and places another on the throne, they even held the Imperial throne for auction. The one who leads the Praetorians is known as a Praetorian Prefect or Praetorian Commander. The number of prefects can be anywhere from one to even three.
