The group has come to a close. We had a good run, thanks to everyone that participated and storm chased in GMSC one last time. This group will be inactive from now on.

Welcome, you've made it to ROTATE!

ROTATE was a research based project conducted by the Center for Severe Weather Research to collect and record data around and near tornadic and non tornadic supercell thunderstorms. With luck, we will hopefully improve numerical models and extend lead time.

Part 1 in 2017 was a huge success, Part 2 is complete.

ROTATE 2017-2018 used three Doppler On Wheels operated by the Center for Severe Weather Research in collaboration with the National Center for Atmospheric Research and NSF to observed the process of tornado formation, tornado structure, tornado cycle, and tornado death. Our goals for this project were to collect observations that will enable the evaluation of tornadogenesis hypothesis and to continue studies of tornado vortex structure and climatology.

Doppler On Wheels:
The Doppler On Wheels directed and coordinated the research vehicles to the most optimal spots for data collection and POD deployment.

Probe Deployment/Scout Vehicles
The job of the Probe Deployment/Scout Vehicles was to place POD's into the path of the tornado. There were four POD deployments in the path of the tornado to get the most accurate data and the greatest chance for one to be struck by the tornado or tornadic winds.

Tornado Intercept Vehicles:
The use of Tornado Intercept Vehicles depended on the situation and whether or not it was worth deploying upon. The rare chance the vehicle does not deploy was fully dependent upon the circumstances.
