Formation and History

The 23rd Regiment foot (Originally named Herbert’s Regiment of Foot after its founder.) were raised in the wales in the year of 1689 by the Honorable Lord Henry Herbert. The regiment was initially the regiment was created to take fight in Ireland against James II. After only 13 years the regiment was honored with the title Fusilier being renamed "The Welch Regiment of fusiliers." The The Welch Regiment of Fusiliers was then honoured a second time for its action during the War of the Spanish Succession in which it gained the title "royal" Now know as the Royal Welch Fusiliers the regiment would see a great deal of action across the globe not just in England and mainland Europe but also in the American Revolutionary War. The regiment would also go onto fight in the French Revolutionary war the the current Napoleonic War.
