Switching out abilities?

New to the game, and I was wondering how abilities work: are they permanently attached to a character, or can they be switched out? Using the search bar, I found this from the develope: "Abilities are gained during the campaign, and you are free to swap them in and out on all characters as you see fit, and make interesting combos." But to test it out, I assigned an ability to a squad member, and when I tried to remove it, or switch it for another ability, it says: "Removing an ability will permanently de...

It's alright. A bit on the rails until your done with the tutorial.

Then, you can't cleanly restart a level just have to suffer loses or lose overall in the game. SO if you love a designer hating you and encouraging misery, this might be the real game for you.
