Take DOOM (1993), but combine it with Half Life and better graphics. That is what DOOM 3 feels like.

The content in the game is good, but I think it's too keen on the "horror" trope of jumpscares appearing every couple of seconds. More on the negative side, it has the indoors environment always looking the same, meaning that you may get lost within the map. DOOM 3 also doesn't have a map feature unlike DOOM (1993) or DOOM II.

In conclusion if you prefer Gameplay > Storytelling go with either DOOM (1993) or DOOM II. If you like Gameplay < Storytelling go with this game as one of the main features is to listen to recordings and look at emails of other people to solve puzzles. Also some of the weapons don't make crunchy sound effects anymore unlike the first two DOOMs and was the reason why DOOM 3 is beta to sigma male DOOM (1993) and DOOM II

If you are playing the DOOM series sequentially, you should start with DOOM 3 as it is mainly a prequel to DOOM (1993) and DOOM II.

Also if you bought the DOOM trilogy alongside DOOM 3: RoE you probably have DOOM 3: BFG Edition. This is the most preferred way of playing DOOM 3 as it removes almost all of DOOM 3's bad game designs. It can also run DOOM (1993), DOOM II and also DOOM 3: RoE. This is the best way to play DOOM 3.

a great game to start the timeline, it has half life vibes but a far more action packed fps as is doom custom, scares are mildly repetitive and as someone who beat it on veteran level i can tell you most of the enemy spawn locations are predictable but all in all i had a good time, worst enemies by far are the demon babies and the revenant is also annoying, oh and also the BBEG of the game has an annoying laugh that persists through the whole game still recommend especially if you want the full story of doom guy and the doom slayer
