To start, the game's artwork and animation are superb. The backgrounds are exceptionally good. There's so much detail poured into the artwork, it's honestly unbelievable. You can visualize the amount of time, effort, and passion the artist(s) put into this game. Furthermore, the story and writing are pretty straightforward. There's a lot of characterization and emotion shown in the dialog. The music is excellent, not surprising for Toby Fox. Toby Fox is good at composing music for cartoony games, so the music does fit the aesthetic well. The gameplay is decent and engaging, this game is primarily a point-and-click puzzle game. Even the "combat" sections are puzzles, although you wouldn't notice at a first glance with how creative and engaging the "combat" sequences are. There are a few hilarious optional choices you can choose in-between sections of the game, but overall the gameplay is extremely linear. However, there is a snake-like puzzle to mix up the gameplay loop a little, but that's pretty much it. There are two major issues I have with the game. The first is the text message dialogue sequences between Joey, the main protagonist, and Xefros, the deuteragonist of act 1. Their conversations are quite excessive, compared to the conversations between Joey and Jude, and really pad out the second half of the game. Not to mention, a lot of dialog between Joey and Jude is optional. The second issue is that cutscenes are unskippable, cinematic or otherwise. This makes a second playthrough more tedious than it has to be, especially during the second half of the game. Lastly, at the time of writing this review, I am not a fan or familiar with the lore surrounding the Homestuck series. Therefore, I cannot commentate on how faithful the portal of certain characters are, the accuracy of the worldbuilding, or references in the game. Nevertheless, if you’re interested in quirky fun point-and-click puzzle games, then you will most likely enjoy this game too.
