Controls unresponsive?

I just got the game in the sales, big fan of beat em up and this looks great :) But the controls seem really unresponsive. The game starts off ok being able to tap the attack button and going through the combo but after a few enemies in, the controls don't seem to respond very well. Hitting the attack button the character barely responds. Using a 360 controller, nothing wrong with it as my other games are working fine. Any help is much appericated as I would love to sit and play this fine looking game....
