Shallow but fun. Not a 4x with the deep empire-building that implies. Probably the least ambitious strategy game I have ever seen in terms of mechanics. Focus on tactics, with strategy limited to deciding which direction to push, when to press the advantage and when to hold to avoid overextension.

However, pushing troops around and blasting the enemy is very fun and satisfying. A steal at the periodic sale price of fiveish dollars, but beware predatory DLC pricing.

A much clunkier, less streamlined, shallow, version Civilization. Just play Civ. Even some of the other knockoffs (like Humankind) are better. Don't waste your time on this. It's a very bad Civ clone, the only thing going for it is 40k. Since there are so many other better 40k games out there just play those.

If you want to get your 40k fix there are better options out there. Inquisitor Martyr, Battle Sector, Rogue Trader, the list goes on.

Really only a good pick for someone who only plays 4X games and likes 40k.

Also note the base game has been part of bundles on and off for a while now. No need to pay full price.

I really have mixed feeling about this game. And for the record, I don't play Civ nor I know anything about 4X in general.

First, I'll talk about the price. Despite I got this game for free, I still bought some of DLCs to unlock factions. But I only bought them when they are on sale. From that I can say, the game and its DLC are just too expensive. Not to mention, there are many kind of DLCs which I think should have included in the first place or in update like random neutral NPC and additional units "packs". Well at least they allow you to play them when others who have those DLC host a game.

Second, the sound. The sound effect is quite good. When Space Marines shoot with their bolter, Orks fire their dakkas, or even Tyranids slash their victims, they are music to my ear. Speaking of music, yeah the game has some of great BGM I ever listened and I find them suit for respective faction. My favorite are Necron's, Aeldari's, Tyranid's, and AdMech's. But the absence of voice-over like in Dawn of War series is such a letdown

Third is mod. Yeah, this game has access to some great mod. From resizing unit to fit the lore more accurately to "fix" the game's letdown I mention earlier to even minor details like modify lasgun's laser color. All it takes is just a simple button of Subscribe.

Fourth is single player experience. While the game itself only give you "skirmish" experience, you can have quest if you activate it on lobby. Quest gives you unusual game where you follow each faction's activity on Gladius, whether to uncover its mystery or just trying to survive. All of the story is delivered mucho texto-style with cutscenes.

Last but not least is the multiplayer. I can't complain about it overall. What is interesting is that we can join the game despite having different mods installed. But then again, I can't say all mods are safe for MP experience.

Will I recommend it? Yes, but only on sale!
