I should start by saying that I'm not American; with that out of the way, I absolutely love this game set during the American Civil War. The experience you get from it is probably closer to that of the average soldier of the period than any other game available today. Allow me to explain:

The interface? Minimal, almost non-existent.
The need to operate as a unit? Essential.
The EASE of operating as part of a unit when playing as a regular grunt? Incredibly easy; press T and follow the star.
The banter? Endless.
The racism? Era-appropriate.

If you're someone who even pretends to be interested in military history, get this game. For best results, join a regiment and attend their events.
