Project X: Light Years is probably the finest horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up released on the PC in years. It is a true homage to the Amiga classic of thirty three years ago. This game is only better in every single aspect ranging from graphics right down to sound. You get longer levels this time around and they can be quite unforgiving if you don't keep on top of things. Practice makes perfect, well almost. The game still hands me my backside now and again on a silver platter and why not? That is just part of the challenge and you simply pick up the controller, give the game a go, get thrashed and then come back another time to make a bit more progress. I owned the original Project X and then the SE version with the extra levels and tweaked gameplay back in the early nineties but it has to be said that this new entry into the series puts Project X: Light Years ahead of the pack - exactly where it deserved to be and (let's pretend that the X2 on the original Playstation never got made!) Recommended and does exactly what it says on the tin, shoot or die. The developer needs to do his take on a proper 2D isometric Alien Breed and then life would be as perfect as it was back in the early nineties again.

The game is even on sale right now, don't sit on the fence on this one, just buy and support a very talented developer whose 21st century vision of what Project X would look like in the modern era is as sublime as it gets here on Steam.

The original Amiga game never resonated with me, but what we have here is a solid shmup driven by a dedicated developer which has so many features added that it is barely a remake anymore. Good gfx, great sound and varied gameplay make this an essential addition to your shmup collection, regardless of your opinion about the original game.
