I got this game because the developer posted on social media saying it was inspired by Unpacking. A lot of the reviews say it is similar to Unpacking, but the only thing that is similar is taking items out of boxes. The game is very short, the levels are short, every room reuses the same items. It isn't a puzzle and does not have the same charm Unpacking does, there is no story being told. The rooms feel empty and don't really make sense. The mechanics are weird, and drawers can fit anything even if it does not make sense, with a max of 2 pieces of cutlery per kitchen drawer.

I do love this game, its super cute and I love the nods to the inspiration of Unpacking. It's fun and visually pleasing, and I love that all the plushies make noises and give little hearts if you right click them. I very much appreciate the love and care that went into this game and have seen the creator posting about it for a while now, it was nice to see it develop and get released :)

However the story mode is very short, I got through it in around 2 hours and I was taking my time. In all fairness I did play the demo a few weeks ago, so there wasn't any learning curve or anything, but still, I would say this will take most people 2-3 hours at most, just because the levels are pretty small. I was hoping for more levels like the second last one where you can do more than 2 rooms for the objective, I thought maybe we'd get to do several full bedroom/bathroom/kitchen/other scenarios before the end so I was admittedly a little disappointed there.

There is a sandbox mode that is fun to play around with, but I know I likely won't play it too much as I tend to enjoy story modes so much more. Some people might get a lot of hours of entertainment out of it though, there's a lot of customization options for the walls and floors, furniture that we don't really see during the story mode, and you can make rooms of all kinds of shapes so that's pretty cool.

I do recommend the game, just keep in mind if you prefer story modes, you might want to grab this one on sale if you can.

If you love games like Unpacking, you'll definitely like this one. Personally, I do like Unpacking more. The placement of items in cupboards and drawers for Unbox the Room seems a little lacking, as you can't seem to utilise ALL the space in each cupboard/cabinet/drawer. But I still enjoyed it, and it took me about 2.7 hours to complete the story mode. Overall, I think it's worth the purchase.
