not bad better than the space aliens one cool monsters and guns but i dont like how when i have 150 shield and health it all goes back to just 100 health at the end of a level a bit difficult for some fights but worth the 3 bucks

"Satan" is a great FPS because of the variety and complexity of the combat. It's not nearly as good as classics like Blood, Doom and Duke Nukem, but compared to most indie shooters it's leagues ahead and really a blast to play. For one thing, it's hard, and there are rules. Even though the levels are very shallow you need to manage your inventory and use the right weapons if you don't want to give yourself a headache. Each weapon has its own handling. Later in the game you get a really powerful machine gun but the draw but is that it has tons of recoil so you need to fire it in bursts to avoid losing control. There's also a holy water grenade that you can use for crowd control, a rocket launcher (That's pretty much useless) and the obligatory shotgun. There's a cross that shoots like a sniper rifle because it's precise and it's extremely useful for knocking out enemies perched on ledges.

You start the game in a church and eventually go out in the city streets and fight the denizens of hell. It's obviously Doom inspired, but there are other weird enemies like gargoyle statues, demonic plants and skulls with feet that run at you. There are huge fat guys that explode, motorcycling skull demons and various floating heads that look like mirrors of Doom's cacodemons. I like that the enemies in this game are evil and intimidating.

Unfortunately the game mechanics aren't the best. Some of this is by design, as retro games often had shoddy mechanics that made them harder. The worst thing is probably the ledge jumping. There's a lot of platforming in this game and one slip up can instakill you. It's just that you move so fast that you are frequently going to fail to time the jump and fall into lava.

You have different keys you need to unlock doors (Like in Doom) and there are also "relics" laying around. If you collect three of these and bring them to a priest, you get a temporary health, armor and damage boost. There are also "confessionals" you can use an unlimited number of times in some areas to get a health refill. Everything from the environments to the weapons and armor look appropriate for the game. The very end of the game feels a tad cheap and tacked on, but by that point I was already sold on the game play.

There are also many boss fights. Initially you fight some satanic rock and roller in the church, but there are some really intimidating ones later on. I thought I had reached the final boss room but there was still a ton of game left with three more huge bosses to defeat. Eventually you descend into hell and there is one fight that seems like the final boss fight because it's just a massive hulking creature surrounded by dozens of weaker enemies that takes 20 minutes to kill. But no, there's even more after that, and you get to pick from one of two different endings. I forgive the shoddy production design because I found this game to be tons of fun, and it got my adrenaline going because it's actually hard. You can save anywhere, but I just used the autosaves to finish it because it made the game feel more like a classic console shooter.

This is a solid 8/10, I feel like it dragged me through hell and was a perfect challenge despite being rough around the edges.
