I very quickly realized that Door Kickers is a very exciting team-building strategy game that works well as a concept. Similar to how you'll experience the gameplay though, while it might well thought out, it's in the execution where Door Kickers regrettably falls flat.

Its main gameplay feature is obviously the way you as the player get to deploy and puppeteer your units. Sadly, the way this was implemented is that you can at all times plan units' next steps. to clarify: if you want to alter an earlier stage of you plan, you'd better be ready to redraw all the later stages after that! This gets especially bad with doors, in that you can't easily change who opens what door, and in what way. This means a change to one unit affects the plan for every unit that passes through a door it interacted with.
If this wasn't bad enough, there are some game-breaking glitches surrounding the pathing . For example, I have noticed on occasion that deleting the last marker of a unit's path deletes a huge chunk of its route. Also, there's a glitch where a unit will phase into a door its trying to open, instead of hanging back as planned (putting itself in the line of fire and blocking teammates' shots). As a heads up: don't try to restart the game or the mission, since none of your plans are saved between sessions.

Most of my time has been spent planning, failing, re-planning, and...repeatedly executing the same plans. Because even when you have the routing to your liking and it doesn't glitch out, 2 of your units with the most powerful armor and shield will at times suffer heavy damage or even casualties against 2 guys in wifebeaters with low caliber sub-machineguns and a guy with nothing but an insultingly small revolver . I would question if the odds aren't being unfairly stacked against the player, if I hadn't lost scores of men to headshots from bad guys on the other side of the map; this makes the unfair disadvantage you're at quite clear . Either the memo that effective range depends on the weapon of choice only went out to your guys, or the baddies decided to break even the laws of physics and disregard that mechanic. Bad guys just get to spot and shoot you from the other side of the map , and if they weren't so accurate, they'd risk shooting themselves in the back if the bullets didn't hit anything on their trip around the planet.

That concludes the ranting part of this review. These frustrations are a result of the contrast between how it feels to execute a perfectly crafted plan, and the soul-crushing realization that you have to replan the entire operation from scratch. I really regret the fact that I can't enjoy the game, but I'd regret giving it a positive review even more. Luckily, there's a silver lining to this: the issues in this game are so apparent, that I cannot imagine these weren't addressed in Door Kickers. This remains to be seen of course, but with all the potential a game of this type has, I hold out hope.
