The game is very jank at the moment. so I would wait a while before getting it, It does need a LOT more time in the oven but, on the positive this game has a lot of potential and could be very good.

The game currently has a fair bit of jank. Not as pervasive or game ending as a lot of the negative reviews give it. The main problem they seem to be having is that the Level 1 early game is rough. Stamina is very low, along with health and 'tools' to use in combat. However, once you follow through the tutorials (which I recommend to follow through until you get to the end of upgrading your tribe), the game begins to expand out more. The "core" of gameplay is locked behind the skill tree, but early levels can go by fast, and dunking on monsters happens soon after. (compare my time in the game to any other reviewer).

It definitely needs time to cook. (at the time of review) QoL/Keybind rebinding is missing, audio issues. "Stiff" monster animations/ai. Foundations for a very solid game are present, its just abrasive at the start. If you don't want to play through those issues, then this game is at the very least worth sitting in wishlist instead of dropping altogether.

For one last personal soapbox. You cannot play this like Monster Hunter. Its like the initial culture shock people had with Wild Hearts, where they called the game bad until they learned to utilize the extra tools the game provided. The tether is a combat tool. The glider can be when you get the skill points to capitalize on it (upgrade other stuff first though.) When the game updates and is able to invest more into making itself pretty and run smoother, this game will be worth the time investment.

I'll leave a recommendation on this with the caveat of saying that if you don't want to support the dev, come back in a few good updates, maybe half a year to a year. Below I'll list my issues in order or severity in hopes that the devs are reading the reviews for feedback on what needs improving. We need more monster hunting games, and this one COULD be great, just... not in its current state.

1. Overall Feel: The game generally needs to be made 'smoother'. That's about the best description I can give it. Monster Hunter works because every action is fluid, you know what chains into what, you know when you can dodge and where you'll move, and you have 'control' over your attacks and movement. Fera misses the mark on many of these, and for many reasons. All of the cool things you see in the trailer are locked behind hours of leveling up and unlocking, which I'll also cover later. Dodging is just MESSY, where half the time I won't move in the direction I'm trying to dodge in. Attacks are intentionally SLOOOW, don't combo quickly, and just feel really bad in general. I got to a point where I found I was better off using heavy attacks and skipping light attacks entirely, because the hitboxes on weapons are... confusing, to say the least, and light attacks just don't feel good to use. The combat begs for the kind of depth that Monster Hunter has, but it simply can't be done with a tired 'light and heavy attack' system. That works for, like... Dark Souls. Not a Hunting game. A sidenote that I remembered after writing this part: Big monsters walking on top of you and getting stuck in them feels TERRIBLE, and so does swinging at enemies to carve them. What was so wrong with just... having a carve button?

2. Sound Design: Holy mother of god, the sound design. Most sound effects are fine if a bit poorly mixed with everything else, but monster footsteps are what eventually drove me from playing more. They are so UNGODLY loud that even turning down sound effects doesn't help, because they're still ear-destroyingly loud, and then you just can't hear anything else. I appreciate the attempt to make it easier to track monsters down using their footsteps, but it has to not sound like someone opening and closing a bearproof dumpster in my eardrums.

3. Skill Points & Stats: Tacked on and poorly executed. Serves as a progression gate to use any of the fun movement abilities at least, and at WORST, you need to sink most of your early levels into Stamina and Health just to swing more than once without running out of stamina and to survive even a single hit. In general, the stamina cost on weapon swings just... sucks. I'd remove the cost for anything but dodging, maybe jumping. Feels VERY bad, one of the worst-done mechanics in the game so far. It's harsh, but I've started to get very tired of games that do this. Either make the upgrades meaningful changes to the weapons' movesets and combine incremental upgrades, or make it all available from the start. As it is, you have too many important things to spend points on, too few, and leveling isn't quick enough to justify it.

4. Storage Caps: Yeah, I know you can make storage buildings like an hour in, BUT... hear me out. I hate the low caps. You get flooded with so much hide and bones when you start cutting up monsters that you don't get the actual monster parts, and then those parts have virtually no use right away, so you have to micro-manage everything and delete dozens of items just to fit the things you need. It's absolute torture. Consider giving every item a modest cap that increases with each building/upgrade instead of one cap for every item under a category. Or just remove it.

5. Gliding/Clinging/Etc: The aforementioned terrible starting stamina doesn't allow you to enjoy gliding for longer than a few seconds at a time. I guess it's not the worst part, but the ACTUAL worst part is trying to tether your way up something or attach to Razorwings. I AM AWARE that you can get extra tether charges by spending skill points... but it requires 2~ levels each, and until I stopped playing, I could never justify it because I had other more important things to spend points on. I'm sure tethering and swinging and jumping between things feels great when you finally have more charges, so why not make it the default? I don't get the point of it.

6. Tribe: Core functionality is okay, but there are frustrations that could do with TLC. Let me feast early to end a day. Let me choose which portal to close when I open a new one so that I don't get punished for multitasking. Make villagers have a little urgency when they're grabbing materials. Let me set a harvesting task to auto-renew when it's done.

Fera could be so good, but it's stuck in this limbo of trying to be gamier than it needs to be, stacking layers on layers of random mechanics. If I'm playing a Monster Hunter-esque game, I want it to FEEL closer to what it's trying to emulate.
