one of the best if not the best horror game ive ever played

yeah. this is actually really really good and I should've finished it years ago. It's probably been like 2 years since I started playing this game by the time of this review so I decided to actually beat the game for the first time since its been on hold in the backlog for way too long. The horror elements are extremely effective and well crafted and is pretty much the highlight of the game in my opinion. I'm a big fan of survival horror and horror games in general but something about this game's atmosphere makes it hard to sit through and gets more difficult to stomach the more you progress through the game. You get to use both ranged and melee weapons with the melee fights being a bit awkward but other than that the gameplay works fine. There are a lot other things in this game I have issues with but I'd argue even the bad and slightly annoying things add a lot to the dreadful, isolating atmosphere and even fits thematically. Cry of Fear at its core is a tribute to the survival horror games that came before it (even the writing and voice acting has that RE1 feel). This game has the tension and horror buildup of Resident Evil, the heavy depressing atmosphere of Silent Hill, and the panic terror of Dino Crisis. Not a perfect game but it was still a great experience for me personally. Its dark, anxiety-inducing, a bit depressing and even not fun to play sometimes due to everything I mentioned but ironically I'm really happy I got to experience this game and finally beat it :)

I wrote an essay about the game for a college class and got an A- while citing Steam reviews. Had to cite names like fartmaster3000 but its okau. 10/10 game made me less suicidal somehow.

soundtrack goes crazyyy. crazy beautiful.
